Mike WiLL-Made It shared his pet peeve on X
Continuing his critique, Mike WiLL-Made It in a series of tweets urged people not to remake a classic song:
"Please dnt feature on your classic remake, it's a pet peeve of mine," Mike Will on X.
Although Mike did not specify the exact reason for his tweet, he called it his "pet peeve," which may be attributed to the lack of originality he perceives in the music industry.
Later that day, a fan suggested that labels are responsible for signing off and clearing these sample remakes. In response, the artist indicated that it's either on "the production company or the independent artist" and not on the label.
"The labels dnt care about that because they are distribution companies, they just put the shxt on the shelf… its on the production company or the independent artist… a major record label don't care what is made & not supposed to either. Their mission is to get it on the shelf and come with marketing to get it to sell off the shelf," Mike responded on X.
Following Mike Will's tweets, Sonny Corey Uwaezuoke, the American record producer and rapper known by his stage name Sonny Digital, retweeted:
"I swear I don't respect anybody remaking a song that's already a hit and then ACT like they made a hit from a song that was ALREADY a hit."
The Atlanta-based producer retweeted Mike Will's pet peeve, agreeing with his point to not make songs from the classics:
"lol 😂 ITS LAME," Sonny Digital added.
However, Mike WiLL-Made It did not mention or allude to anyone specifically in his tweet. However, several recent examples of artists reinterpreting original hits exist.
For instance, Usher collaborated on Summer Walker's Come Thru, which samples his 1997 single You Make Me Wanna. Similarly, Fergie performed with Jack Harlow at the VMAs when he sampled her song Glamorous in his hit First Class.
