Singer Sky Ferreira recently opened up about her long absence from the music scene and why she can't re-record her old songs. In a candid interview with Vogue, published on Monday, December 2, 2024, the singer discussed her song Leash from her upcoming film Babygirl.

The track marks Ferreira's first independent release since she parted ways with Capitol Records in 2023. Talking about her "fraught" relationship with the label, she explained:

"They kept me from putting out new music for 10 years as a way of making me look like I’m incapable of it, like it was my fault that I don’t technically own anything I record."

The partnership resulted in Sky's 2013 album, Night Time, My Time. The singer funded the recording sessions for the project. Despite its commercial and critical success, her follow-up album, Masochism, never materialized (it was originally scheduled for a 2015 release).

When questioned (for Vogue) whether she would be able to release any music she recorded with Capitol Records, she denied saying:

"I can’t right now, even though I was the one who paid for all of my studio sessions. I’m working to try and get some of those songs back, but I’m not getting every single one. It’s such a complicated process and I have to figure out how to do all this shit by myself now."

Citing Taylor Swift re-recording her old songs, Sky Ferreira explained that Swift could do that because she was a "billionaire." She explained that she (Sky) put any money she made from her work into making new music.

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Ferreira boasts an estimated fortune of $1 million.

"I was catatonic for a few weeks after that email"—Sky Ferreira about being dropped by her record label over an automated text

Sky Ferreira was born in 1992 in Venice, Los Angeles, and was raised by her grandmother, who had been Michael Jackson's personal hairstylist. In a January 2014 interview with the Telegraph, Ferreira explained that she expressed interest in music as a child, and with Jackson's encouragement, her grandmother enrolled her in opera lessons.

As a teenager, she also began modeling and sharing videos of her singing on MySpace. The posts led to her discovery by producers Bloodshy & Avant. In 2009 she signed a recording contract with Parlophone and began working on her debut album.

In 2010, Sky Ferreira had the opportunity to star in the independent film Putty Hill. She has since appeared in movies like The Green Inferno, Curious Females, and The Trust. Ferreira has appeared in campaigns for Jimmy Choo, Calvin Klein, Playboy, and Adidas and continues to model.

While the singer's plans for a debut project were never realized, she, however, did drop a lead single, Obsession (2010). Eventually, she released her EP, As If!, in 2011, following it up with Ghost in 2012. Some of her songs include S*x Rules, Red Lips, and Everything Is Embarrassing.

Sky Ferreira released her debut album, Night Time, My Time, in 2013, receiving positive reviews. Known for blending synth-pop, dance-pop, and indie rock, she began working on her second album, Masochism, which has not been released yet. Ferreira recently released the singles "Don’t Forget" (2022) and "Downhill Lullaby" (2019), both intended for Masochism.

In 2023, Sky Ferreira took to her Instagram to explain that she wanted to put the album out. Expressing her frustration, she slammed those calling her "difficult and high strung," stating she had no choice and that she had to protect herself and her work.

To be noted, she never specified who was labeling her as such. She only remarked that she can't focus on what she's "supposed to do," present her work "the way (she) want(s)," and perform her shows "the way (she) needs it to," suggesting that her label allegedly greylisted her.

Citing Sky Ferreira's Instagram story, Stereogum in a January 2023 article wrote:

"Despite having to basically sacrifice every aspect of my life to make sure it happens & the amount of time/work I put into everything beforehand. It’s not okay. If I’m not allowed to say something without consequence & the people who are supposed to do their job refuse to look out for me...How am I not going to be “difficult”?!?"

Eventually, Sky Ferreira parted ways with Capitol Records. Per the singer (she told Vogue), the label dropped her via an automated message on the 10th anniversary of Night Time, My Time. Talking about the situation the singer told Vogue it felt "liberating" but added that she was "angry." She stated:

"I was catatonic for a few weeks after that email. Not because I was dropped, but just the way it happened. It felt like their way of trying to break my spirit one last time."

Sky Ferreira hinted that Don't Forget was set up to fail, claiming she wasn't allowed to do interviews or press photos, calling it "blatant sabotage." She told Vogue that she plans to release a new track following Leash early next year, with Babygirl scheduled for release on December 25.

Capitol Records has not publicly reacted to the development.
