Days after Donald Trump spoke about Miley at a rally, Billy Ray Cyrus showed support for the 2024 Republican presidential candidate. On Wednesday, August 7, 2024, the singer took to his Instagram to share a photo with Trump, stating,
"I stand here with former U.S. President Donald J. Trump as a proud AMERICAN. Mr. Trump is the 6th U.S. President I’ve met and I felt like Mr. Corey Comperatore was right there with us. Some stood through for the red, white and blue/And some had to fall. Some Gave All."
Billy's post comes after Donald Trump praised him in a speech at the Bitcoin conference in Nashville on July 27, which the country star attended. Criticizing Miley for her political views, Trump remarked,
"Billy Ray Cyrus is here. Where is Billy Ray? He's around here someplace, and he's great. He's a conservative guy. I said, How did you get such a liberal daughter? How had that happened, Billy Ray?"
To be noted, Billy Ray Cyrus has limited comments settings activated on his Instagram, so only those accounts he follows can comment on his posts.
As news of the country singer's post spread, screenshots of it began circulating on social media, including the subreddit r/Fauxmoi. Internet users were quick to criticize him, with one writing:
Many brought up his current strained relationship with Miley and ongoing divorce with his wife, Firerose, to clap back at his move. Here are some comments seen under u/annagrace2020's post on r/Fauxmoi:
Others shared comments calling Billy Ray Cyrus toxic and irrelevant,
Billy Ray Cyrus and Miley Cyrus are rumored to have a strained relationship since the former's wedding to his estranged wife, Firerose
This is not the first time Donald Trump has commented on Miley. Back in 2013, the former president seemed to be a fan of the pop star, tweeting in her defense after her infamous MTV VMA performance with Robin Thicke. He wrote,
"I am a defender of @MileyCyrus, who I think is a good person (and not because she stays at my hotels), but last night's outfit must go!"
The singer later (in 2015) told the New York Times that Trump called her (she was staying at one of his hotels) to state, "I know everyone’s talking about it, but I loved it."
Miley has been vocal about her anti-Trump stance. In 2016, The Hollywood Reporter shared an article noting that after Trump was elected, she called him a "f*cking nightmare" in an Instagram post. Miley's sister Noah, too, disapproved of Donald Trump, sharing an IG story showing a clip of the Republican candidate urging Christians to vote with the caption, "I'm terrified."
The Cyrus family seems to have tense relations with each other. Rumors of trouble began when Miley's sisters Noah and Braison were absent from their mother's wedding to Dominic Purcell in August 2023. The Miley's siblings spent the day shopping at Walmart.
Billy Ray Cyrus married Tish in 1993, and they share five kids. The couple filed for divorce in April 2022, citing "incorrigible differences." By November of the same year, the country singer was engaged to Australian singer Firerose. Fans noticed that Miley and Billy unfollowed each other on their social media accounts. She also remained absent from Billy and Firerose's wedding in 2023.
Rumors escalated when the singer, who took home two Grammies this year, left out her father and siblings Noah, Trace, and Braision from her acceptance speech. Amid speculations, Billy Ray Cyrus shared an Instagram post dedicated to Miley on June 7. He wrote,
"I’m incredibly proud of her. She's a survivor and a true artist. She learned early on to love and appreciate the fans who make everything possible."
Just days after the post, the country singer, who initiated a divorce from Firerose after seven months of marriage, filed an amendment to the complaint, stating that she was isolating him from his family.
He cited "irreconcilable differences and inappropriate marital conduct" as the reason. Firerose, for her part, filed a counter-complaint accusing Billy Ray Cyrus of emotional and psychological abuse and volatile behavior.
However, back in May, Noah wished her mother a happy birthday, and the mother-daughter duo were spotted together in Los Angeles on July 30.
In a June 12 interview on My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, Miley told David Letterman that she was grateful for Billy Ray Cyrus. She explained,
"I'm grateful for being able to watch him ahead of me. He's almost given me this map. There is a map of what to do and what not to do. And he's guided me on both."
She elaborated Billy had a rough childhood but did his best for her, stating,
"My dad had a really rough childhood. And my childhood—I mean, we can go and talk about the hard times or the struggles—but I had food, I had love, I grew up in a beautiful big house and my dad didn't have that."
Miley Cyrus has not publicly reacted to the development at the time of writing.
