The release of the 2024 Spotify Wrapped is just around the corner. On Wednesday, November 27, the Swedish music streaming service dropped a teaser about the 2024 Wrapped "coming soon," with no date officially revealed.
With Wrapped currently in its eighth year, listeners eagerly await their annual music recap while they anticipate what new features they could witness this year. In 2023, Spotify claimed that its Wrapped was the "biggest ever created" in terms of its audience reach and the kind of data it provided.
Besides offering users a peek into their individual listening trends, Wrapped also reflects on national and global listening trends, featuring the top-streamed artists and songs of the year. In 2023, Taylor Swift was named the most streamed artist, unseating Bad Bunny, who had held the title for three consecutive years.
Spotify Wrapped was first introduced in December 2016
Spotify Wrapped was first introduced in December 2016 as an innovative marketing campaign, turning the user listening data into a personalized and shareable experience, showcasing listeners their top five artists, favorite songs, and most-loved genres. Wrapped succeeded in the 2015 trend of Year in Music, but the changed title had a deeper impact on listeners.
While the annual data celebration was much simpler and less interactive back then, it has evolved into an even richer celebration, with dynamic visual identities, interactive content, and deep social media integration.
In 2017, Spotify Wrapped started including artists and advertisers, offering insights into total streams and listener demographics.
In 2019, the Wrapped was designed in a story-like format, making it easier to share it on social media platforms like Instagram and X. This easy shareability led to the feature becoming a viral phenomenon.
It was in 2021 that other music-streaming platforms also caught on with the trend—Apple Music launched its own "Apple Music Replay" campaign. However, it didn't receive the same level of engagement as Spotify's Wrapped.
The 2020 Spotify Wrapped witnessed the addition of more interactive features like quizzes and personalized badges, as well as podcast statistics, which became a hit among the listeners.
In 2021, Spotify Wrapped incorporated cultural references and slang, fueling internet memes and conversations, which only added to its success.
Spotify Wrapped 2024 could be dropping any day now
While Spotify hasn't announced any release date for the release of the 2024 Wrapped, based on the patterns of the previous years, it either drops in the last week of November or the first week of December. Last year, the feature was unveiled on November 29.
Based on these trends, listeners are now expecting Spotify Wrapped to be dropped either on November 30 or on December 1. As soon as the Wrapped drops, it will be accessible on both the mobile app as well as Spotify's dedicated website.
The feature is available to all Spotify users, regardless of whether or not they've purchased a premium membership. Users can also use the recap to save a playlist of their top 100 songs of the year.
Another feature of Spotify Wrapped that ignites arguments every year is the date when the music-streaming platform stops counting. This year, rumors claimed that Spotify didn't count past October 31, which was dispelled by the platform itself.
Spotify tweeted on October 26 that Wrapped would still be counting past October 31. However, no details about when the counting would stop were shared by the platform.
In anticipation of the Top Streaming Artist on Spotify, listeners have started a bet on who would win it this year, with over 90% of the betters voting for Taylor Swift. Other contenders in the running are Drake, Bad Bunny, and The Weeknd.
