DJ Akademiks talked about Kendrick Lamar's GNX songs in his recent video, a clip from which was uploaded on an X handle @Chatnigga101 on Sunday (December 22). In the clip, the DJ pointed out how Lamar's Squabble Up didn't find the same success as Not Like Us.
Akademiks called the latter "a global hit," while the former was "not even a national hit currently," in his opinion.
He also mentioned that it was "incredibly difficult" for Kendrick Lamar to get the entire world to care about the songs of his surprise album, GNX, which is what had happened in the case of Not Like Us.
Akademiks added that, in the wake of the Lamar-Drake feud, the Money Trees rapper was consistently leaning on the idea that he could get more reach by dissing or sneak-dissing Drake. The DJ added:
"It's no way you could live off, 'Oh I'm dissing Drake too consistently' get burned on your music. Squabble Up is, I think, a hit. I just don't think it's a 'Oh my god it's gonna dominate the next three months' hit."
Then talking about Lamar's TV Off, Akademiks called it more of a TikTok song.
Kendrick Lamar earned 5 Grammy nominations for his Not Like Us
Kendrick Lamar's GNX has peaked atop Billboard's 200 album chart, with all its tracking ranking in the Billboard Hot 100's top 30. However, Not Like Us remains his most successful song in 2024.
The song was released 14 hours after Lamar dropped Meet The Grahams, another diss track in which he claimed Drake ran a s*x trafficking ring inside his Toronto mansion.
Not Like Us was released on May 4, 2024, and debuted atop the Hot 100 chart soon after. It also ranked at the top of other year-end charts, including that of Pitchfork, The Ringer, The New York Times, and Consequence.
A diss track aimed at Drake which doubled down on the allegations of s*xual misconduct and p*dophilia against him, Not Like Us also broke several streaming records on Spotify.
The music video of Not Like Us, which was dropped two months later - on July 5, 2024 - has since received over 194 million views and five million likes. It has also earned five nominations in the upcoming 67th Annual Grammy Awards, including:
- Record of the Year
- Song of the Year
- Producer of the Year
- Best Rap Performance
- Best Rap Song
Whether or not the Poetic Justice rapper wins in any category at the award show - scheduled for February 2, 2025 - remains to be seen.
Lamar made a feature appearance on SZA's 30 for 30
Amidst DJ Akademiks' speculation of Kendrick Lamar dissing Drake consistently, the Count Me Out rapper has allegedly done the same in his latest feature.
Lamar made a guest appearance on 30 for 30 - a song from SZA's latest deluxe album, LANA, which dropped last Friday, on December 20.
Below is K-Dot's rap verse in the track, which seems to be a shot fired at the One Dance rapper:
"You f*ckin' with n**gas that's thinkin' they cuter than you, oh/ Say you on your cycle, but he on his period too, oh"
The title of the SZA song allegedly takes after a 2015 track Drake release, which was called 30 for 30 Freestyle. The two were also once involved romantically.
In a PEOPLE interview published on October 3, 2023, SZA talked about their short-lived fling having taken place in 2009, calling it "childish."
30 for 30 marks the third collaboration between Kendrick Lamar and SZA this year, after Gloria and Luther from the former's surprise sixth album was released last month. The duo will also co-headline the Grand National Tour in April 2025.
