On May 17, an eight-year-old surveillance video of Sean “Diddy” Combs was leaked on social media. In the video, he allegedly appeared to be assaulting his former girlfriend and accuser, Casandra “Cassie” Ventura, in a hotel hallway.
In response, Diddy took to his Instagram on May 19 and issued a public apology in a 70-second video, saying he was “truly sorry” for his “disturbing” behavior, and took “full responsibility for his actions.”
“I’m disgusted. I was disgusted then when I did it, I’m disgusted now,” he added.
Meanwhile, activist and motivational speaker Dr Umar Johnson shared his insight on the matter and wrote on his social media, mocking Sean Combs:
“I am not going to give this too much energy as we have far more important issues to address than what happened 10 years ago. However, this isn’t the end for Diddy. T.D. Jakes will help him set up his own mega church, he will be saved & baptized…”
For those unaware, T.D. Jakes is one of Diddy’s close associates and a practicing bishop, who during his Sunday sermon stated how “difficult” it was to watch the viral video which made him “angry.”
Dr Umar Johnson believes Diddy is facing “backlash” as Cassie was not a “dark-skinned Black woman”
Black activist, school psychologist, motivational speaker, and internet personality Dr Umar Johnson weighed in on the viral assault video featuring Diddy and Cassie.
He predicted the future for the Bad Boy Records owner and claimed that Bishop T.D. Jakes will help him “set up his own mega church” where he will be “saved” and “baptized,” and will “probably make more money as a pulpit p*mp than he ever has as a mogul.”
“Puffy will rise from the ashes #born again,” Johnson wrapped the Instagram post.
He added that there were far more important matters to address in recent times and focus should be given to them, rather than something which happened nearly a decade back.
In a follow-up post, Dr Umar Johnson wrote:
“I also wonder this, if Cassie was a dark-skinned Black woman, would Diddy be getting this backlash? Y’all don’t go this hard when dark-skinned Black women are done bad every day! We need to make sho [sure] that any man who does this to women be held accountable.”
The Philadelphia native further continued by saying how earlier, there were reports of Sean Combs reportedly assaulting his late former girlfriend Kim Porter, including allegedly “breaking” her nose, but that never made it to national news.
Dr Johnson also mentioned the names of Breonna Taylor and Sandra Bland and how the society “let off the gas” in their cases, seemingly because they belonged to the African-American community.
In brief, exploring Diddy’s latest apology video
Last week, CNN released a video of Diddy and Cassie in a hotel hallway which showed the former seemingly shoving the latter to the ground, kicking her as she lay still, and eventually dragging her across the hallway.
The footage dated March 5, 2016, garnered severe traction online and prompted a response from Diddy. He took to his Instagram and posted a video of himself stating:
“It’s so difficult to reflect on the darkest times in your life, but sometimes you got to do that. I was f*cked up. I mean, I hit rock bottom. But I make no excuses. My behavior on that video is inexcusable. I take full responsibility for my actions in that video.”
Sean Combs further added how he “went out and sought professional help” and went to “therapy” and “rehab” to deal with his issues and asked the almighty for “mercy and grace.”
“I’m so sorry. But I’m committed to being a better man each and every day. I’m not asking for forgiveness. I’m truly sorry,” he wrapped.
Meanwhile, one of Cassie’s attorneys told the media that the hip-hop magnate’s recent apology was “more about himself than the many people he has hurt.”
The Los Angeles County DA’s office also issued a statement saying how Sean Combs won’t be “prosecuted” for the 2016 assault video, as the matter was now “beyond the timeline.”
Diddy was first accused by singer Cassie, one of his former girlfriends, in November 2023 of several counts of assault and abuse in a lawsuit, which was eventually settled. Since then, other women have also come forward with similar accusations. So far, all of those cases are pending.
