TDE's Top Dawg speaks on Kendrick Lamar's sixth studio album 'GNX'

Following the surprise release of Kendrick Lamar's GNX, on November 22, several notable hip-hop figures expressed their admiration for the Grammy-winning rapper's fifth consecutive No.1 album.

The project touched on various themes, which include the 2024 rap beef, his upcoming Super Bowl performance, hisrelationship with former TDE signees, and more.

Lil Wayne also expressed his confusion at being called out on wacced out murals, suggesting Lamar shouldn't consider his "kindness for weakness". Building on the internet conversations surrounding a potential Wayne vs Kendrick beef, founder and CEO of TDE, Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith, commented on the situation stating:

"Dot is a dangerous man right now. Everything I thought he would be at 16 years old is here right now. Everybody stand down. I promise you."

Kendrick Lamar was signed to Top Dawg Entertainment for 17 years, with the label onboarding the rapper in 2005 while he was still in high school. In 2022, he formed his own record label, pgLang, with GNX marking his first independent release since stepping away from TDE's roster.

Building a strong bond with Top Dawg artists Jay Rock, Ab-Soul, and ScHoolboy Q, Kendrick co-formed the hip-hop collective Black Hippy, which disbanded not long after the Not Like Us rapper left the record label in 2022.

"I jog my memory, knowin' Black Hippy didn't work 'cause of me / Creatively, I moved on with new concepts in reach / Top, remember all them sessions we would strategize / To hit the streets, then come back, record three records? Ah," Kendrick Lamar raps on 'heart pt. 6'.

Before addressing Black Hippy disbanding, the rapper spoke about his close bond with Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith on track 10 of GNX titled heart pt. 6, where he rapped:

"Top used to record me back when it was poor me / And now we at the round table for what assures me / I guess my motivation was the yearnin’ for independence, poured everything I had left in the family business / Now it's about Kendrick, I wanna evolve, place my skill set as a Black exec.”

Longtime collaborators Kendrick Lamar and TDE signee SZA are gearing up for multiple North American stadium concerts as part of their Grand National Tour, scheduled to kick off in the Spring of next year.
