Rock duo Tenacious D had to postpone their concert in Newcastle, Australia after Kyle Gass commented on the recent alleged assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump. On Sunday, July 14, while the duo was on stage for a show in Sydney, Gass was presented with a birthday cake. Jack Black told Gass to make a wish before blowing the candles off. While blowing off the candles, Gass reportedly said:
"Don’t miss Trump next time."
In the much-circulated footage, laughs and applause could be heard. The comment, however, didn't sit right with many. Senator Ralph Babet, the leader of the United Australia Party, took to social media on Monday and suggested that Gass get deported for his comment.
Grammy-winning rock duo Tenacious D's Australian tour began on July 13, and only two shows had happened
On Sunday, July 16, Senator Ralph Babet urged Australian immigration minister Andrew Giles to "revoke" Tenacious D's Jack Black Kyle Gass's visas.
"I call on the Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to join me in denouncing Tenacious D, Jack Black, and band member Kyle Gass, and I call on the Immigration Minister Andrew Giles to revoke their visas and deport them immediately," Babet said in a statement.
The senator believed that it would be "unthinkable" if the rock duo was allowed to stay in Australia after the comments.
"Anything less than a deportation is an endorsement of the shooting and the attempted assassination of Donald J. Trump," Babet added.
Kyle Gass' comment also received backlash from Kyle and Jackie O show broadcaster. He said on the show:
"That’s some serious twisted s**t. I never want to speak to them again."
Gass's comments made a deeper impact since they were made sometime after former US President Donald Trump was shot at while he was rallying in Pennsylvania. Authorities later gunned down the suspected shooter. While several people, primarily the right wing, were trying to cope with the incident, Gass made the comment that eventually backfired on the duo.
How the Australian government will respond to Babet's request regarding the Tenacious D duo is yet to be seen. The group was expected to perform across several cities in Australia till July 22. It is unclear if the shows for cities like Adelaide, Newcastle, Brisbane, and Melbourne will be held. It is also worth mentioning that the postponed show was sold out.
After the final show on July 22, the duo was expected to move to New Zealand and have shows in Auckland and Wellington. On July 16, Frontier Touring, the company which was responsible for the promotion of the tour, said on Facebook:
"Frontier Touring regrets to advise that Tenacious D's concert tonight at Newcastle Entertainment Center has been postponed. Ticket holders are asked to hold onto their tickets until further information is available."
The Facebook post, however, did not reveal the reason behind the postponement.
No further information about the rock duo's tour has been revealed as of now. It has been reported that several fans had already lined up outside the venue when the information about the postponement was announced. The postponed tour was a part of the duo's The Spicy Meatball Tour, which began on May 6, with its first show in Atlanta.
Since then, Tenacious D has performed in several US cities, including Kansas City, New Orleans, Austin, Houston, Rogers, and Chesterfield. The European leg of the tour included cities like London, Prague, Berlin, Nuremberg, Dublin, Glasgow, Leeds, and Paris. The rock duo was in its final leg of the tour when the unfortunate postponement happened.
