Grammy-winning rapper Cardi B responded with humor and clarity after a fan of Nicki Minaj accused her of reigniting the rappers' long-standing feud.
On October 3, 2024, Cardi posted a clip on X of Whitney Houston's famous 2002 interview with Diane Sawyer. As a result, a fan alleged that Cardi had thrown shade at Minaj in the post, sparking heated discussions online. Moreover, due to the speculation, Cardi took to her X account and suggested that her beef with Minaj is "stale."
"B*tch that beef so stale and dry and do nothing for me," Cardi wrote.
According to UPROXX, the feud between hip-hop titans Cardi B and Nicki Minaj reportedly began in 2017, when Cardi's hit single Bodak Yellow reached the number-one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This achievement made Cardi the first female solo rapper to top the chart in nearly two decades, a milestone Nicki Minaj had long aspired to during her own career.
Cardi B responds to alleged shade towards Nicki Minaj
On Thursday, Cardi B took to X to respond to a comment made by a Nicki Minaj fan, delivering a sharp rebuttal. In her tweet, Cardi emphasized that people should refrain from harassing others online, stating that such behavior provokes responses.
She further addressed the ongoing social media tension between the fan bases.
"As fans, stop harassing people over dumb sh*t if y'all don't want a f*ckn respond. Yall all over my quotes over a meme that ain't had sh*t to do wit yall," Cardi wrote.
The speculation began on Thursday when Cardi posted a short clip from Whitney Houston's iconic interview with Diane Sawyer, where Sawyer questioned Houston about her health and possible drug use. Houston responded pointedly, asking if she wanted to know.
Following Cardi's post, one user questioned why she had just recently begun sharing memes about Whitney Houston, indicating that she was trying to copy Minaj. In response, Cardi B swiftly shut down the comment by sharing a screenshot, showing she had already used a Whitney Houston reference back in 2021, indicating that this was not new territory for her.
"You sure bout that?? Now go see if b***hes was posting this meme before that date," Cardi wrote.
Another X user then posted a lengthy comment criticizing Cardi B for allegedly taking a jab at Nicki Minaj, igniting the online exchange that prompted Cardi's response. However, Cardi's original tweet did not mention Minaj, leading to speculation that the post had been misinterpreted.
"You wanna say her name so bad to stay relevant bc your career is a mess and your ni**a was on his 29th side b**ch while you were pregnant so you bookmark 6 am tweets to respond to later in hopes that people will remember you and go stream your 6 year old album since the next one isn’t coming," the X user said.
It is possible that Cardi shared the Whitney Houston clip in response to a separate controversy involving DJ Akademiks, who had recently claimed that Cardi cheated on her husband, Offset, with an NFL player.
A brief about the feud between Cardi B and Nicky Minaj
In October 2017, Migos featured Cardi B and Nicki Minaj on their single Motorsport, and the scenes of Cardi and Minaj in the music video were shot separately, fueling speculation. Later, in April 2018, in an interview on Beats 1 with Zane Lowe, Minaj suggested that Cardi did not support her explanation of shooting on different dates, fueling speculation of the feud between the two.
"You still did interviews just to paint Nicki as the bad person. And play the victim. And that really, really hurt me because I really fully supported her," Minaj said.
The rapper continued,
"And up until this recent interview she did [with Ebro Darden for Beats 1], I had never seen her show me genuine love in an interview. And I can only imagine how many girls wished they could've been on a song with Nicki Minaj."
In September 2018, the two's feud escalated quickly, as both became physically violent at New York Fashion Week, where Cardi reportedly threw a shoe at Nicki.
Later in 2022, after Nicki Minaj's Super Freaky Girl (Queen Mix) release, some of the featured artists, like Akbar V and JT, publicly criticized Cardi B. Fans speculated that their attacks were influenced by Nicki Minaj, though this was not explicitly confirmed.
