Miley Cyrus has had several onstage performances over the years, but she said she can't be blamed for all of them, especially her Party in the USA performance at the 2009 Teen Choice Awards. At the time, the then 16-year-old Cyrus faced backlash after she performed alongside a metal pole attached to an ice cream cart.
During an interview with her older sister, Brandi Cyrus, for Spotify's Billions Club series on November 22, Brandi asked her about what she felt about her 2009 performance that sparked "quite a large controversy." The Flowers hitmaker responded:
"This is going to be no surprise to you. Do you know whose idea that was?"
When Brandi guessed if it was Miley's mom Tish Cyrus' idea, Miley said yes and added:
"Yup, that was my mom's idea."
Recalling the aftermath of her controversial Party in the USA performance, Miley Cyrus remembered that her mother was "nowhere to be found." She added:
"When I got in trouble the next day, you know who was nowhere to be found? Tish Cyrus."
However, despite the controversy, the Grammy-winning pop star recalled that the time was memorable for her, though not for the same reasons as people might think. She said that while others remember that performance for her scandalous dancing alongside a pole on the ice cream truck, she remembers it for the diamonds. Miley Cyrus shared that it was the first time she wore real diamond jewelry onstage.
Miley Cyrus reveals that her mom, Tish Cyrus, is the reason for her signature long locks
Miley Cyrus has been in the Hollywood spotlight since she was young, and that means fans have seen her experiment with different fashion styles and hairstyles over the years. Speaking of hairstyles, the pop star revealed that her mother Tish Cyrus was the reason for her iconic long, wavy tresses.
Joining Harper Bazaar's The Good Buy podcast, she told hosts Lynette Nylander and Leah Chernikoff that she was asked to wear “250 individual hair extensions”.
"If it was under 250, my mom [Tish Cyrus] wasn't having it. We need another row. Tish would be like, 'Take another row up. We would have 250," she recalled
She recalled that "era" fondly, saying that she loved her fringe style and that she "will always stand by fringe," but that it got a little too much at some point. She remembered:
"The fringe would go from under the bus like down to the bottom of the boot and it was wearing me. It [was] also 250 individual hair extensions and so there was just a lot of like down."
Further recalling why she retired the hair extensions, Miley Cyrus told Nylander and Chernikoff that it was because her hair and the fringe "were just taking me down." The Used to Be Young singer added that she needed "something to go up," and so she changed her hairstyle. She has rocked numerous hairstyles ever since, including the iconic mullet during the COVID-19 quarantine and the platinum blonde pixie cut during her Bangerz era.
Speaking of fashion and looks, she said that her mom "questions some of her looks." One of the most recent "questions" was about the cashmere Margiela vest she wore at game night in her house, which she thought was super cute but something Tish didn't like.
