Eagle-eyed fans spot Lil Wayne sporting an XO chain in a photo from 2023 posted by The Weeknd. On Wednesday, July 7, 2024, the musician took to his Instagram stories to share a still of Lil Wayne wearing a black tank top with multiple chains. This included an XO chain, which is a reference to The Weeknd's record label of the same name.
"the (goat emoji) @liltunechi (Weezy's account handle) reocking the XO playing the (guitar)"
The image is taken from the music video for Jon Baptiste's Uneasy (August 2023), which featured Wayne. Fans were left shocked because Lil Wayne's protegee, Drake, has been beefing with The Weekend since the 2010s. This prompted one X user to comment (referring to Drake's OVO brand):
"That owl got melted down."
Many called out Wayne for being confused about the happenings in the hip-hop world. Some criticized him for not standing with Drake. One user, referring to Drake and Kendrick's recent feud where both claimed they had moles in the other's team, commented that Lil Wayne is the OVO mole. Here are some comments seen under NFR Podcast's post on X:
"Ovo Mole," one user remarked.
"Wayne the type to walk in the middle of a shootout and not know wtf going on," a fan quipped.
"So Drake included himself in a beef with pusha T by backing up Birdman and lil Wayne but Wayne out here vibing with The Weeknd," a user claimed.
Others explained Wayne is not part of Drake's beef. Some even expressed their exasperation at the beef becoming central to the industry.
"Why do ppl keep questioning Wayne over beef that is not is," another added.
"Not everything is about that damn beef guys lol," an exasperate fan reacted.
"His third eye is open and he probably doesn’t care about shi like this anymore. 2004 Weezy would’ve been different. Now he’s all smiles and happy," Kevin Allen stated.
People recently accused Lil Wayne of dissing Drake in his guest appearance on Cordae's Saturday Mornings
Lil Wayne helped Drake launch his career, even signing the latter to his label, Young Money Entertainment. The pair have frequently collaborated on charting hits like Miss Me, HYFR, and Loyalty. The Toronto-born rapper also has a Wayne tattoo he debuted in 2017.
His recent collab with Cordae, Saturday Mornings, left fans wondering if the Young Money chief was throwing shade at Drake. In his verse, Lil Wayne raps,
"I'ma need a little love from your hatin' *ss/ Real love, real love, Mary J. playin'/ Need less yes-men and more amens/ I'ma need more real prayers and less prayin' hands."
Netizens speculate the glove is referencing the glove featured in Kendrick Lamar's Drake-diss track, 6:16 in LA, and praying hands is referring to Drake's logo for 6 God. Later in the song, Wayne raps:
"You standing on business, I'm a business man/ I'm a goat, n----, you a sacrificial lamb /You a teddy bear, n----, you a Teddy Graham."
In his verse, Lil Wayne is calling his target sweet and simple, like Teddy Graham. Fans connected the lines to Drake, whose real name is Aubrey Drake Graham, who was frequently called sweet for most of his career.
More about the Drake vs. The Weeknd drama
In 2010, Drake introduced The Weeknd, who at the time was an obscure musician, to his fans. The rapper also featured two of the latter's songs on his OVO blog. The pair collaborated on songs like Crew Love. However, things turned sour in 2011 when The Weeknd turned town OVO to sign with Republic Records.
The two rappers made up around August 2017, but soon tensions arose when Drake was rumored to be dating The Weeknd's ex, Bella Hadid. Since then, the two artists have taken subtle shots at each other over the years on interviews and diss tracks.
Lil Wayne has not publicly reacted to The Weeknd's IG story.
