Appearing on Spotify’s Therapuss with Jake Shane on June 6, 2024, the Shape of You singer, Ed Sheeran, shared he doesn’t believe the artists who say they don’t care about success.

He went on to say that if they didn't care what other people thought of the music they released, they wouldn't be doing it. He continued by saying that otherwise, they would have solely created music for their enjoyment since it made them feel good.

He further stated that all artists desire to be loved and that they are on stage for that reason. For the same reason, they sign with a record label as they want others to hear their songs.

He continued:

“I don’t really subscribe to this whole, like, not caring thing… That’s all a kind of ruse… Of course it sounds cool to say but every artist wants people to like their music… It really pisses me off when people are like, ‘Oh I don’t care how it does’. I’m like, ‘F*cking shut up! You do! Everyone does.’ […] Anyone in the pop game definitely cares.”

On his talk show, Therapuss with Jake Shane, host Jake Shane takes on the role of the metaphorical therapist, where the show's followers sit down for a profoundly introspective deep-dive therapy session with him.

Similar to his popular Instagram series Tell Me What's Wrong, Jake recently teamed up with people from business executives to his housemates, to talk about their life as they work through their struggles. It is released on Spotify every Thursday and includes various guests.

Ed Sheeran was this week's guest and he talked candidly about his life, career, and his opinions on other musicians.

Regarding artists who claim not to care about success, the singer said:

“I don’t believe any artist that says they don’t, otherwise you wouldn’t release music because you’d be like, ‘If I don’t care what people think, then why would I even put it out?’ You’d just sort of make the music and be like, ‘Well that’s made me feel good.’ All artists, we want to be loved. That’s why we are on stage. And that’s why you sign to a record company to go, ‘I would like people to hear the music that I’m making’.”

The singer went on to say that he disagrees with this nonchalant attitude. Although it may sound cool to say so, he believes that every musician wants their work to be enjoyed by others.

For the same reason, Sheeran finds it quite annoying when people behave like this. He also believes that musicians genuinely care about other people's opinions.

Apart from this, the X (Multiply) singer further disclosed that he hadn't owned a phone in almost 10 years and gave a good explanation for his choice. He said:

"I haven’t had a phone since 2015. I got rid of it in 2015… I found I had the same number from like age 15 and I got famous and I had 10,000 contacts in my phone. I just was losing real-life interaction so I got rid of it."

Ed Sheeran then revealed that he had switched to email, responding to messages once a week on his iPad. On Thursday or Friday, he gets an hour of his time, which he normally spends sitting in the car. He responds to all of the emails, catches up, and speaks with everyone.

Ed Sheeran is currently preparing for his events in Germany, Portugal, and the Netherlands, which are scheduled for the second half of June.
