Wiz Khalifa found himself in deep trouble after being arrested in Costinesti, Romania, for illegal drug possession. The incident took place on Sunday, July 14, 2024, while the rapper was headlining the Beach, Please! Festival. Shortly after his arrest, Wiz Khalifa issued a statement on X addressing the incident, saying:
"Last night's show was amazing. I didn’t mean any disrespect to the country of Romania by lighting up on stage. They were very respectful and let me go. I’ll be back soon. But without a big as* joint next time."
The post left many social media users infuriated, as many claimed that it was irresponsible of the rapper to behave in such a manner. On Instagram, @TheShadeRoom shared the rapper's tweet, prompting one netizen to comment that it was not “smart” of the rapper to do such a thing.
The comment read:
"That wasn’t smart one bit."
Many others expressed their frustration with Wiz Khalifa’s post on X and his alleged possession of cannabis, despite it being banned in the country:
Some netizens criticized the rapper for his actions, while few praised his "guts."
As per Agence France Presse, cannabis is considered a “high-risk” drug under Romanian law and is not legal in the country. Prosecutors allege that Wiz Khalifa smoked the drug onstage during his performance. The publication also stated that if Khalifa is convicted, the rapper could face up to 10 years in prison.
Romanian prosecutors claimed that Wiz Khalifa possessed 18 grams of cannabis
While Wiz Khalifa was released within a few hours of his arrest, Romanian prosecutors are now trying their best to prove that the rapper lit and smoked cannabis while performing on stage. They also issued a statement claiming that Khalifa possessed 18 grams of cannabis “under the shape of a craft cigarette.”
The Romanian anti-organized crime prosecutor, DIICOT, issued a statement detailing the situation:
“During a recital held during a music festival held in the Costinești resort, Constanța county, Khalifa possessed over 18 grams of cannabis (risk drug) and consumed onstage another amount of cannabis under the shape of a craft cigarette."
The statement continued:
"We make it clear that, during the entire criminal process, the investigated persons benefit from the procedural rights and guarantees provided by the Code of Criminal Procedure, as well as the presumption of innocence.”
Following the incident, several videos of the rapper being escorted out of the venue by officials circulated on social media. Khalifa has now been charged with illegal drug possession. The incident has ignited a heated debate on social media, as many are siding with the rapper, while others are bashing him.
