Latto (aka Alyssa Michelle Stephens) released her much-anticipated album, Sugar Honey Iced Tea, on August 9, and fans have already started discussing it on social media. Many have claimed that the album contains a couple of shots aimed at the Bronx rapper Ice Spice.
Sugar Honey Iced Tea is the 25-year-old's third studio album, which has a runtime of 1 hour and 2 minutes. Released by Streamcut and RCA Records, it follows her 2022 album, 777. The album also features several guest stars, including Young Nudy, Coco Jones, Ciara, Megan Thee Stallion, Teezo Touchdown, Cardi B, Flo Milli, Mariah the Scientist, and Hunxho.
Fans have gone gaga over the speculated Ice Spice diss references in Latto's new album and have shared their opinions on X (formerly Twitter). Some of the tweets are as follows:
"The play on ice spice name Isis. Latto bars and shade are so good #SugarHoneyIcedTea," commented one person on X.
"ice spice vs [the rapper] ends today!!" commented another fan on X.
"I don’t need to see a soul comparing Latto to Ice Spice again," agreed another.
Many others praised the rapper's new release and compared her album with that of Ice Spice's latest release, Y2K!
"No shade to miss ice spice or JT but THIS is how you make a rap album. Great lyrics and impeccable flow. Like it or not [the rapper] is the true princess of rap right now and that can’t be debated. . #SugarHoneyIcedTea," wrote one fan.
"It’s time to admit Latto is actually better than ice spice. Latto gave us authentic music and ice gave us hype. Now that I’m thinking about it, why were yall comparing them to each other anyway….," agreed another.
"Latto is at it again coming for the rap girls. Wordplay on Ice Spice name and another sub for her and Nicki. [The rapper] takes me out she don’t care! #SugarHoneyIcedTea," opined one netizen.
Some fans, however, seemed to have different opinions. Some of the comments are as follows:
"The comparison was numbers. If “talent” mattered, girls wouldnt have Grammys and more #1s than Nicki Minaj. Let’s not act slow today," declared one fan about Ice Spice.
"Good for her. Now work on getting her “talent” to translate to success.," tweeted another fan about Latto's album.
This comes after Ice Spice confirmed in a Twitter Spaces chat in February that she actually dissed the 25-year-old in her song Think U The Shit (Fart). The Bronx rapper explained that the diss was in response to an alleged diss by the Muwop singer while previewing a snippet earlier this year.
“Seeing that I’m in the back of your weak a## snippet? I was like, ‘Wait a second, that’s me?’ So I’m like, ‘Since we’re talking about me, let’s talk about me,’ so I dropped that [“Fart”]. It was really just a snippet. I was like, ‘This has to be fake. This is AI.’ But b**ches be bold, so I was like, ‘Oh, we’re being bold today,’” revealed Ice Spice.
“Would She Even Want To Do That?” - Latto explained her take on the beef
Latto spoke about the alleged beef between herself and Ice Spice in a cover story interview with Billboard in July 2024. According to the Sugar Honey Iced Tea rapper, there would never be a beef between herself and Ice Spice like the one between Drake and Kendrick Lamar.
“If I was to do [a battle], it would have to be with somebody I feel like Imma go t## for tat with. I really don’t mean it as shade. Would she even want to do that? I feel like she’s doing her in her lane. It’s two different types of vibes. I don’t even think she gives me like, ‘Oh, she wants to engage in an actual rap beef,'” explained the rapper.
However, she also explained why taking "lil jabs" at one another in music is not as serious as it sounds. According to the rapper, dissing each other is part and parcel of being in the industry, and she doesn't even take it seriously. However, she explained that she doesn't think Ice Spice would be interested in a diss battle of releasing tracks solely intended to insult one another.
