At the VMA Awards held on September 11, 2024, Tyla bagged the award for Best Afrobeats for her song Water. During her speech, she expressed her gratitude to her fans, family, and the people for accepting “African music.”
While videos from her on the stage went viral, many netizens also shared videos of Tyla asking Halle and Lil Nas X to hold her award for her. As Tyla came up on the stage and was handed over the award, she claimed that she was not “strong enough,” and hence, gave it to Lil Nas X to hold it for her while she addressed the audience.
As soon as the video of the same started going viral, many social media users began sharing hilarious reactions. One netizen even commented on Instagram page The Shade Room’s post about the same, and said:
“The way Halle didn't move a muscle needs to be studied."
Others also mocked the situation caught on camera, and how Halle did not move when Tyla requested her and Lil Nas to hold her award.

The clips going viral, where the Water singer was seen asking for her award to be held, grabbed her attention, prompting a response from the 22-year-old. As many netizens noted how the singer asked Halle Bailey to hold the award, Tyla posted on X that she was not asking the actress.
She clarified on X:
“Y'all make everything weird… I was not asking my girl Halle… We just girls, STFU I WON A VMAAAA.”
As the singer accepted the award for the Best Afrobeats category, she talked about African music in her speech. Stating how her song has proved that “African music can be pop too,” she added:
“This is just so special, but also bittersweet because I know there’s a tendency to group all African artists under Afrobeat. It’s a thing, and even though Afrobeats have opened so many doors for us, African music is so diverse. It’s more than just Afrobeats."
She then stated how she hails from South Africa and wanted to represent her culture. Tyla also gave a shout-out to Afrobeats musicians during her speech..
Tyla’s song Water was released on July 28, 2023, however, the remix of the song, featuring Travis Scott and Marshmello, dropped much later on November 17, 2023. As soon as the remix was released, it topped several charts globally, in countries namely New Zealand, the United Arab Emirates, the USA, and the UK
Furthermore, apart from the VMAs, the song has won many other awards including the Basadi Music Award and Grammy Award. Moreover, it was also nominated for the BET Awards, iHeartRadio Music Awards, South African Music Awards, and many more.
