On August 14, 2024, Spotify interviewed Sexyy Red, Latto, and Flo Milli to discuss the current state of rap. This came about after the three rappers were a part of the streaming giant's "The Gold Standard" exhibit in New York City on July 31, 2024, to honor the female rappers "setting the bar in hip-hop."

Other rappers included in the exhibit were Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi B, Doja Cat, Ice Spice, Saweetie, GloRilla, and the City Girls. During their joint sit-down interview with Spotify, Sexyy Red praised Nicki Minaj for her longevity in the rap industry.

“I like Lil’ Kim. Nicki, though, she [has lasted] in the game for a good amount of years, so I want still want to be in the game. Some b*****s be fading off, be for real,” she said.

As the clip made the rounds on social media, many pointed out that Latto and Flo Milli were not seemingly enthused by Sexyy Red praising Nicki Minaj. One person tweeted:

Many agreed with this statement, claiming the rappers looked mad during the clip.

"Just mad asf," one person tweeted.
"Ok but pay attention to what Sexyy Red said, it heavily applies to Cardi B, and the two sitting next to her. They didn’t like that “falling off” word," another person added.
"I swear they almost ate her up with looks," someone else noted.

Others wondered if there was bad blood between Nicki Minaj, Latto, and Flo Milli.

"The way Flo mili did nothing… barbz just looking for a reason to hate her," one person said.
"Flo Milli hates Nicki? Why?" another person added.
"Y’all doing too much they was literally just waiting for her to finish talking…," someone else commented.
"Wait Flo Milli a Nicki hater?" another netizen questioned.

"It's a sport" — Sexyy Red about competition in rap

Spotify's "The Gold Standard" paid homage to the many female artists who have revolutionized the hip-hop industry with their music. The exhibit showcased portraits of the rappers, done by Mali-born artist Manon Biernacki, and a biography detailing their accomplishments.

There was also a mural of the 10 rappers in the main exhibition space, resembling Michaelangelo's Sistine Chapel. Visitors were welcome to take pictures in front of the murals.

Sexyy Red, Latto, and Flo Milli, who posed with their portraits on the exhibit's day, sat down for an interview with Spotify. Their conversation touched on the topic of why female artists were leading the rap industry, with Latto saying female rappers were known for their versatility. Flo Milli also chimed in, saying:

“We all stay true to ourselves ‘cause a lot of us [have] been rapping before it was a trend. So, I feel like all the girls that [are] really popping now just stayed to true to themselves and believed in something they really couldn’t see.”

Sexyy Red talked about the competitive nature of rap, as seen in the various rap battles throughout history, the most recent one being the high-octane feud between Kendrick Lamar and Drake.

Sexyy Red called rap a sport and Latto added fans brought out the intensity which made it “way more competitive than it is in real life.”
