Katy Perry's newest single Woman's World came out on July 11, 2024, via Capitol Records. The track is the lead single off her upcoming album 143. The Guardian reviewed the track upon its release and called it "garbage," giving it a one-star review.
Fans have weighed in on The Guardian's review after it went viral, taking to X to express their feelings on the matter, as exemplified by the tweet below:
Many fans agreed with the reviewer Laura Snapes in the negative assessment of the track, while some like the track itself but were unhappy with the video:
"I think it's the fact that women are so sexualized in the video that shocked them. I like the song but I don't agree with her vision of women," stated one fan.
"Wasted hype, wasted come back, wasted visuals, wasted budget," was the response by another fan.
"Katy Perry really thought a feminist anthem produced by a woman-abuser would save pop music," one netizen commented.
"Song sucks so bad it turned a professional review to a personal one," one commenter responded.
"I kinda agree with this. Besides the whole dr.luke awkwardness, this song feels very....tone deaf. And the MV does not help. The song doesn't really talk about womens issues, nor does it say anything empowering for women, it just a vague cash grab imo,' another commenter stated.
"They couldn’t give her a 0 so they put 1," another netizen stated.
More on The Guardian's review of Katy Perry's Woman's World
The Guardian reviewer, Laura Snapes, opens the review by stating that all the good things about the track were repackaged nostalgia from similar previous songs by Beyonce and Lady Gaga.
She then points out that Dr. Luke, the alleged abuser of Kesha, produced the song, and the misunderstanding this brings between the message of the song and its production reality in the public mind,
"Much of the online commentary around Woman’s World underlines the disconnect between working with a producer who comes with such baggage to make a song about the strength of women."
The reviewer calls the song "garbage," which has drawn much attention from internet fans,
"Not to sound like one of those men (actually I’ll take Perry’s insistence that it’s my goddess-given right as a woman to be essentialist, OK!) but: this garbage has six writers. Granted, it is infernally catchy, but it is the Bic for Her of pop, the pink Yorkie for girls (get your lips around this!), a song that made me feel stupider every sorry time I listened to it."
Laura Snapes ends the review by calling it confusing and a fall in the quality of Katy Perry's music. Katy Perry's new single has also received negative reviews from other magazines, including Pitchfork, Consequence, Variety, Billboard, and more. The singer has not responded to the negative reviews as of the writing of this article.
Katy Perry's new album 143 will come out on September 20, 2024.
