Puerto Rican reggaetón A-lister Anuel AA endorsed Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump at his rally in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. On Friday, August 30, 2024, the musician, donning the red MAGA cap, took the stage to explain:
"Since Trump hasn’t been around, it’s not a secret, we’ve been going through a lot as a country. Biden always promised, promised. A lot of politicians promised through the years. All of us know... the best president the world has seen, this country has ever seen, his name is President Trump."
As the word about Anuel's endorsement spread, some internet users cheered. One even called it "huge for the culture," as footage of the Grammy-nominated rapper Fivio Foreign is seen greeting the Puerto Rican.
Many praised Trump and his MAGA movement while criticizing his rival Kamala Harris. Here are some comments seen on X:
"Trump's Maga movement is continuing to grow by leaps in bounds. maga," one user wrote.
"I’m very happy to hear Anuel AA is on our side then!" a user remakred.
"Because he has seen real communist and knows what Harris is about COMMUNISM," @Sargasmica commented.
Others suggested the latter's campaign should use his music (referencing several singers calling out his team for illegally using their music). However, not everyone was glad with the news and called AA a "sellout."
"Maybe use his music! He needs to use music from people who support him," another suggested.
"He’s a sellout just like TRUMP Remember the hurricane photo op Puerto Rico?" a user added.
"He's literally hated by most. Cute try though," one commented.
"Let’s stay united. Let’s vote for Trump," — Anuel AA asks fellow Puerto Ricans to support Donald Trump
Emmanuel Gazmey Santiago, who goes by the stage name Anuel AA, hails from Carolina, Puerto Rico. His music style is known to include samples and interpolations from songs from his youth. Some of the rapper's popular songs include China, Me Gusta, Otro Trago, and Location.
Anuel is surrounded by a strew of controversy, including legal troubles and feuds with peers like Cosculluela, Ivy Queen, and 6ix9ine.
While endorsing Trump at the rally, he urged fellow Puerto Ricans to vote to vote for the Republican nominee, stating:
"All my Puerto Ricans, let’s stay united. Let’s vote for Trump. I personally spoke with him, he wants to help Puerto Rico grow and succeed as a country. He wants to keep helping Latinos in the U.S. Let’s keep doing things the right way and let’s make America great again."
Anuel AA was not the only Puerto Rican musician to take the stage on Friday. Fellow reggaetón musician Justin Quiles, too, showed his support for Trump's campaign. He praised Trump for not being a "puppet" and called him the most honest president. He added that a lot of Latinos continue to stand with him.
No other statements have been released since the development.
