On October 29, 2024, a filing in Manhattan federal court indicated that Sean Combs' attorney had requested the names of all accusers to facilitate the legal team's case preparation, as per CBS News. In response, a prosecutor stated in a statement obtained by USA Today that this "improper request" should be denied.
"This improper request should be denied in its entirety, particularly here, where there are serious and ongoing concerns of victim and witness safety, tampering, and intimidation," the prosecutor wrote.
The whole legal trouble came as a result of Sean Com's high-profile arrest on September 16, 2024, from the Park Hyatt hotel on West 57th Street under s*x trafficking, racketeering, and transportation to engage in prostitution, as per Sky News.
Prosecutors urge denial of Diddy's demand for accusers' identities
On Tuesday, in a lawsuit filed in Manhattan, Sean Combs' attorney requested that the New York judge order prosecutors to disclose the names of all individuals who have accused his client of s*x trafficking. Furthermore, the attorney submitted a letter to the Manhattan federal court judge stating that the hip-hop mogul seeks to obtain the accusers' names to prepare his defense for the upcoming trial.
In response, the prosecutor submitted a request to the Manhattan federal court judge advocating for the denial of the attorney's request. The prosecutor noted that it is improper for defense attorneys to request the release of victims' identities and information regarding other evidence that might reveal the government's case.
Further emphasizing the "witness safety," the prosecutor urged for the demand to be "squarely rejected" —
"A thinly veiled attempt to restrict the Government's proof at this early stage of the case and to hijack the criminal proceeding so the defendant can respond to civil lawsuits. This demand should be squarely rejected, especially in light of the risk it poses to witness safety," the prosecutor said.
The prosecutor continued,
"As the defendant well knows, there is zero legal authority for his attempt to co-opt this criminal proceeding to defend against civil litigation."
However, on October 30, 2024, during proceedings in Manhattan, U.S. District Judge Mary Kay Vyskocil indicated that the lawsuit involving a then 19-year-old woman who accused Diddy of m*lestation and eventual r*pe could not remain anonymous. According to USA Today, the judge suggested that the case may be dismissed if the victim fails to establish her identity.
The case referenced by Judge Mary Kay Vyskocil was filed on October 15, 2024, under the pseudonym Jane Doe by attorney Tony Buzbee, who has represented several anonymous accusers since Diddy's arrest.
The lawsuit alleges that in 2004, when the woman was 19 years old, Combs invited her to a photoshoot near her college campus, where she was a student at Brooklyn College at the time.
Following the photo shoot, Jane Doe allegedly received an invitation from Diddy to an after-party at a hotel in Manhattan, which she attended with a friend. The woman expressed that she was thrilled to receive an invitation from such a high-profile individual.
However, upon their arrival, Jane Doe and her friend were allegedly taken by Combs' entourage to a private room. When they inquired about the purpose of their presence, the entourage indicated that they should already be aware of the reason for their invitation.
"You know what you are here for," Combs' entourage replied.
The lawsuit obtained by CNN further alleges that Diddy entered the room and encouraged the young women to use cocaine, which they refused. This refusal reportedly angered Combs, who then began to touch them without their consent. Additionally, the music mogul is accused of coercing one of the women into performing oral s*x on him.
The lawsuit claims that Combs then demanded that Jane Doe undress, threatening to kill her if she did not comply. Subsequently, it is alleged that the Bad Boy Records producer r*ped her. Combs' attorney has denied these allegations, stating that their client has never assaulted anyone, whether male, female, or minor.
As the legal proceedings continue, Diddy has remained incarcerated at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn and is waiting for his trial, scheduled for May 5, 2025, according to ABC News.
