On October 4, the Instagram page of Gag City posted a picture in which rapper Nicki Minaj's head was shown as the eye of a storm. The post was captioned:

“Hurricane @nickiminaj will make first landfall in Jacksonville, Florida bringing her Category 5 Record Breaking #PinkFriday2 #GagCity Reloaded World Tour to @vystarvetarena tonight featuring @skillibeng, @bia, @tyga & @djboof.”

The caption was accompanied by several emojis and a link to the Nicki Minaj tour website, while the image was credited to @yacousinvinnie.

However, the now-viral image was met with backlash as netizens pointed out that it was inappropriate, considering Florida and other Southeastern states of the USA were adversely impacted by back-to-back hurricanes, including the bygone Hurricane Helene and the approaching Hurricane Milton.

For instance, Instagram user @leo_maraschino commented on Gag City’s post by writing:

Several others joined the conversation and shared similar reactions on X, calling out the Gag City IG post on Nicki Minaj.

“This feels so disrespectful to the people that died/ went missing from Hurricane Helene… yes I can’t deny it isn’t good but it’s too soon,” a person wrote.
“Not funny for us Floridians who lost everything!!!!” one person wrote.
“I get it creative but literally 200 ppl just died from a hurricane and so other being displaced - there has to be another promo tactic but this is a bit insensitive and I know that wasn’t your intent,” wrote another.

Others continued to slam the viral post:

“This is nasty timing Pedro… People have just lost homes and loved ones due to the hurricane. This is so insensitive,” a netizen wrote.
“Hello wtf??? This seems so disgusting and disrespectful to the people that just suffered from hurricane Helene…” wrote another.

However, Nicki Minaj's fans lauded the artwork:

“I’m obsessed with this promo,” an individual wrote.
“Ouuuu this is cute,” wrote another.

For those unaware, Nicki Minaj announced her Pink Friday 2 World Tour in December 2023. She shared she would make a stop in 37 cities across the world, including the USA, starting in March 2024 in Orlando, Florida. She was also scheduled to perform at Florida’s Jacksonville, Tampa, and Miami on October 4, 5, and 6, respectively.

All you need to know about Gag City, the Nicki Minaj fandom

Gag City is a fan-made AI-generated Pink Kingdom dedicated to Nicki Minaj, founded in September 2023. At the time, the rapper dropped the cover for her fifth studio album, Pink Friday 2, which featured Minaj sitting in an open-air train in the sky wearing a white gown and gold crown.

In the background appeared an “aerial view of a cityscape” and a skyline with “puffy, pink clouds.”

As soon as the creative album cover became viral, Nicki fans, nicknamed Barbz, started claiming that the city showcased was called “Gag City.” It was a reference to the word “gag” or “gagged,” which means “fierce” or “mesmerizing.”

Since then, the word Gag City prevailed, which Barbz hailed as the AI-made city of Nicki Minaj, and a virtual pink fandom began to grow around it, featuring themed graphics, artworks, and more. Illustrations of businesses, concerts, and an entire universe dedicated to the Queens rapper also began circulating, which has ever since dominated the internet.
