Pop singer Billie Eilish teams up with Google Maps for her upcoming tour to help her fans make sustainable choices while traveling to her shows. Per a Yahoo! Tech article from Tuesday, September 24, 2024, in a statement, the musician explained:
"I am so excited to see you all at my shows over the coming months, and for us to work together in reducing our collective footprint when it comes to transportation and what we eat. Every action matters, no matter how big or small, and together we can truly begin to heal our beautiful planet."
As news of Billie Eilish and Google Maps teaming up spread, internet users were quick to react. Some felt the move was a marketing gimmick, commenting:
Many criticized the Bellyache hitmaker, calling her a hypocrite. Here are some comments seen on X:
"Sustainability this, sustainability that but she’d the the first person to drop 28639330 physical variants of her album. Even if it’s recycled there’s no point in putting out different variants of the SAME album. SHE IS THE BIGGEST HYPOCRITE," @reputanush13 commented.
"shes still on this? girl hanging onto the clout for life," another added.
"Lol, your fans will travel anyway creating a huge carbon footprint. What kind of hypocrisy is this? Why not do the concert online to reduce the footprint?" a user suggested.
Others came to her defense, praising her move and calling out the naysayers.
"She's 22 years old, yet she understands the fact that millions of people die every year due to air pollution. Even though certain artists can't do that," @supergaywoman wrote.
"Twt dragging her for doing this is peak stupidity," a fan commented.
"if you’re mad at this, you’re experiencing symptoms of jobless-itis," another remarked.
Billie Eilish launches her Hit Me Hard and Soft Tour on Sunday, September 29, 2024, in Quebec City
Billie Eilish will embark on her Hit Me Hard and Soft Tour beginning on Sunday, September 29, 2024, in Quebec City. Per the article by Yahoo! Tech, the singer stated:
"Thanks to Google Maps, everyone will have easy access to resources that will help you make great sustainable choices when you come to my shows. Thank you for caring. See you soon!"
During the 43-city tour, Google Maps will offer tips for eco-friendly travel, such as fuel-efficient routes and public transportation options. Additionally, Billie Eilish is promoting vegan and vegetarian restaurants in ten U.S. cities, including New York, LA, and Chicago, which fans can find on Google Maps.
Moreover, as part of the camping, the Google Maps peg (in the shape of a man) will be replaced by Billie's signature Blohsh icon. Anytime a fan explores some of the concert venues, the blue logo would appear.
This is not the first time the nine-time Grammy-winning artist has spoken about sustainability. Earlier this year, Billie Eilish released an eco-friendly vinyl for her third studio album, Hit Me Hard and Soft. Talking to Billboard at the time, she criticized artists who delete multiple denial formats to boost sales, calling it "frustrating" and "wasteful." She added:
"As we all know, it’s pretty impossible to force someone to care. All you can do is express and explain your beliefs, but a lot of people don’t really understand the severity of the climate (crisis). And if they do, they’re like, ‘Well, what’s the point? We’re all going to die anyway.’
Billie Eilish continued:
"Believe me, I feel that way too. But ‘what’s the point’ goes both ways: ‘What’s the point? I can do whatever I want. We’re all going to die anyway.’ Or, ‘What’s the point? I might as well do the right thing while I’m here.’ That’s my view."
Billie Eilish will hold shows for her Hit Me Hard and Soft tour in the United States through 2024, before moving to Australia in February 2025. The tour will wrap up in Europe towards the end of July.
