Rapper Juvenile has reacted to the CNN panel mentioning his hit track, Back That Azz Up on Thursday (August 1), while discussing Donald Trump's recent comments on Kamala Harris and how she became "Black."
The rapper shared the clip from Thursday's CNN panel on X and wrote,
“This sent me. Invite this man to the Back That Azz Up Tour to celebrate 25 years since he #BecameBlack #BlackThatThangUp.”
The clip featured panelists Jimenez, Bakari Sellers, and Shermichael Singleton discussing Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump discussing how Vice President Kamala Harris became a "Black person."
The talk began with Jimenez cracking a joke with Bakari Sellers. He said,
“Bakari, I’m half-Colombian but for the purpose of this panel, I guess I will be Black. How do you think Vice President Harris handled her response to Trump?”
In response, Bakari Sellers mentioned he found he was "Black" when he heard Juvenile's track, Back That Azz Up. Sellers joked,
“No, I think this is an amazing moment in American TV history because we can all tell the audience the time we turned Black. For me, it was about ‘99, 2000, when I first heard Juvenile’s ‘Back That Azz Up’ and I had a rhythmic cadence to my dance. At that moment, I knew I was Black. But look, I think Kamala did what she was supposed to do.”
The rapper is currently performing on his Back That Azz Up tour, which celebrates 25 years of the release of his hit number. The tour began on July 7 in Juvenile's hometown, New Orleans. It is to end on December 31 in the same city.
Juvenile's Back That Azz Up completed 25 years in June 2024
In February 2024, Juvenile took to X to thank his fans for giving his track, Back That Azz Up, so much love and support over the years. The track was originally a part of the rapper's 1998 album, 400 Degreez. The rapper wrote,
"Y’all really been backing that azz up for a quarter century. I gotta hand it to the azzes. Y’all did yalls thang."
Back That Azz Up first came out in November 1998 as part of 400 Degreez but was later released as a single in June 1999. The album turned 25 years in 2023 while the song completed a quarter of a century in June 2024.
400 Degreez was certified platinum four times by the RIAA. The first single from the album was called HA, ranked number 68 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart upon release. Back That Azz Up, retitled Back That Thang Up, ranked at number 19 in the Billboard Hot 100 after it was pushed and released as a single. The track also featured rappers Lil Wayne and Mannie Fresh.
The song gained some newfound appreciation recently after Juvenile included the track in the set list of his performance at the Tiny Desk Concert in 2023. The episode saw Juvenile collaborating with Mannie to perform a medley of hits, including Slow Motion and Set It Off.
On June 12, the rapper took to social media to announce his Back That Azz Up 25th anniversary tour with the entire list of dates. He wrote in the caption,
"Yall made the tiny desk happen so this is your reward."
The rapper's hit number remains one of the most sampled tracks in pop culture and played a significant role in popularizing a signature New Orleans-based music style called bounce music.
