Attorney Tony Buzbee has come forward with new accusations against Jay-Z's Roc Nation. In a lawsuit filed at Harris County District Court on January 3, Buzbee alleged that Marcy Croft, one of Jay-Z's lawyers, paid his former client, Jose Maldonado, to file a lawsuit against him.
According to the court documents, Buzbee claimed the rapper's lawyers coerced Maldonado to sue him by impersonating federal officers and showing up at his house.
"On behalf of defendant Marcy Croft, two individuals attempted to call plaintiff (Maldonado) many times. They then went to what they believed was the plaintiff's home. They actually went to his father's home. They identified themselves as federal officers. When they realized they had the wrong house, they continued to contact plaintiff. They were pushy," the suit claimed.
Buzbee, in a statement to the Houston Chronicle, dubbed this alleged incident "illegal and unethical." He also claimed Jay-Z had contacted several of his former clients to sue him, adding that he was not "intimidated or deterred" by the new lawsuit.
This statement echoed Buzbee's earlier lawsuit, filed on December 18, 2024, in which he alleged that Roc Nation conspired to "illegally seek out more than two dozen current and former clients" to sue him and his firm.
Jay-Z became entangled with Tony Buzbee after one of his clients, dubbed Jane Doe, accused the rapper of r*ping her with Diddy at an afterparty in 2000. She claimed to be 13 at the time of the alleged r*pe. Jay-Z has since vehemently denied the accusations, vowing to prove his innocence.
Buzbee is representing over 100 clients who have accused Sean "Diddy" Combs of s*xual assault and abuse.
Jay-Z filed a motion to sanction Buzbee for false allegations
According to All Hip Hop, a spokesperson for Roc Nation denied Tony Buzbee's claims that Jay-Z's legal team coerced former clients to sue the attorney, dubbing them "nonsense lawsuits." Marcy Croft, the lawyer mentioned in the lawsuit, also denied the claims in a statement to the Houston Chronicle.
"For over 25 years, I have dedicated my career to exposing and dismantling networks of fraud and manipulation. I didn't ask to be part of this fight. But now that he's dragged me into it, he should know I'm not someone who backs down. Mr. Buzbee should be worried. Truth and justice are on my side. And I have every intention of holding him accountable," Croft said.
The rapper is reportedly trying to sanction Tony Buzbee and throw Jane Doe's lawsuit out of court. On January 8, 2024, the rapper filed a motion accusing the attorney of circulating false allegations and not verifying Jane Doe's facts before filing the suit.
For the unversed, Jane Doe's story about the alleged assault had several discrepancies, as acknowledged by the alleged victim. In an interview with NBC News in December, Doe admitted she made some mistakes in her retelling. However, she stood by her claim that both rappers r*ped her at the party.
“You should always fight for what happened to you. You should always advocate for yourself and be a voice for yourself. You should never let what somebody else did ruin or run your life. I just hope I can give others the strength to come forward like I came forward,” she said.
Exploring Jane Doe's suit against Jay-Z and Diddy
Tony Buzbee first filed the lawsuit in October 2024, at which point he only mentioned Diddy by name as one of the alleged perpetrators. The suit also named two more perpetrators: a male dubbed "Celebrity A" and a female dubbed "Celebrity B."
The suit claimed Diddy and Celebrity A took turns assaulting Doe while Celebrity B watched. However, when the suit was refiled in December, Jay-Z was named "Celebrity A."
Doe claimed the alleged assault occurred at an MTV VMA afterparty in 2000. She claimed she was driven to a "large white residence" by a limo driver, where she met celebrities like Fred Durst and Benji Madden.
Doe also said she had a drink at the party that left her feeling woozy, so she went to lie down in an empty bedroom. She alleged that Diddy, Jay-Z, and an unnamed woman entered the room, following which the two rappers r*ped her.
"Jay-Z comes over, holds me down. I start trying to push away. He puts his hand over my mouth, tells me to stop it, to cut the s**t, and then he r*pes me like he had me overpowered," she claimed in her NBC interview.
The legal battle between Jay and Jane Doe is ongoing at the time of this article. Diddy is currently awaiting his s*x trafficking trial scheduled for May.
