This year, for Halloween, American singer-songwriter and rapper Janelle Monae transformed herself into the well-known character E.T., from Steven Spielberg's 1982 film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
Showcasing her transformation, Monae took to Instagram on Wednesday, October 30, and uploaded a photo of herself in the costume. The post's caption read:
“You finally came home… Welcome back E.T…. Thank you Google Maps…. Starring yours truly as both E.T. & Janellllliott…”

Soon after the photos went viral, netizens took to Instagram, under the comment section of Janelle’s post, or to X, under @PopBase’s post to react to the same. Most of the netizens either joked about the costume or praised the singer for the innovative attire. One Instagram user even addressed her as the “Undefeated Halloween champ.”
Other netizens also preached to the choir and took to X to comment. Some asked if that was really Janelle and not someone else, while another one praised her for the costume.

Janelle Monae opened up about her unique Halloween costume of 2024
For Halloween 2024, Janelle Monae displayed her hyper-realistic outfit on Wednesday in which she portrayed the loving extraterrestrial E.T. from the 1982 movie of the same name. Monae recreated several of the movie's most recognizable looks while wearing a full-body replica of the original character.
Monae even portrayed the role of the movie's main character, Elliott, in a final photo to depict the iconic flying bike scene. Additionally, after her Halloween costume went viral, in an exclusive interview with Vogue on October 30, Janelle Monae discussed why she chose the character in particular.
She also opened up about how she managed to pull off the costume. While talking about the same, she said:
“E.T. has lurked in my mind since I was a baby. From Spielberg’s writing to the cinematography, the story of E.T. and Elliot has touched my heart deeply. This movie always leaves me in tears."
"The bond Elliot and E.T. had was a display of the best parts of us; Pure love and ally ship. We need more of that. I’m always praying we can all impact each other’s live like they did each other’s.”
During the interview, she further talked about her love for Halloween and added:
“I vividly remember my family taking me trick or treating with my sister and cousins growing up. I remember us all feeling so jovial to go to Party City or Spencer’s and find a costume… Our parents.. give themselves and us permission and freedom to get creative! This birthed my love for transforming into another character.”
She also dressed up as the E.T. for The Jennifer Hudson Show's Halloween episode, which will premiere on Thursday, October 31. On Instagram and X, the talk show posted a sneak peek of the episode, which saw a fully costumed Janelle Monae greeting the host Jennifer Hudson.
In the clip, as Monae called Hudson by the name, the host said,
"I never would’ve guessed I would've got to meet E.T.”
Then, an excited Hudson informed the crowd:
"E.T. knows my name. Thank you for coming to the happy place. I don’t know if I should say Janelle or E.T.," to which Monáe then answered, "E.T. is Janelle Monáe."
