As the 2024 MTV VMA kicked off on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, the award for the Song of the Summer award was given to Taylor Swift for her newly released track, Fortnight. The song released in April 2024, also features Post Malone and became an instant hit amongst the masses, debuting at number 1 on Billboard Hot 100 chart.
However, as the VMA was presented to Taylor Swift for the song, many social media users were left disappointed. They expressed how it should have been Sabrina Carpenter’s song, Espresso to get awarded.
As @PopBase posted about the same on X (formerly Twitter), and one netizen commented, and said:
“Undeserved, espresso should’ve won.”
On the other hand, others shared the sentiment, as they wrote:
“Love this song but it should’ve been Espresso,” one person said.
“Honestly, no disrespect to her but I think we all know the real song of summer was espresso,” another person said.
“I love Taylor but that was meant for Sabrina ! Expresso was everywhere!” another X user said.
On the other hand, there were also a few who alluded that Taylor Swift's song was not as popular, to win the award.
“Not even song of the week,” one person said.
“NOBODY WAS LISTENING TO THIS DURING SUMMER?” another person said.
Meanwhile, many others praised Taylor Swift and even complimented her outfits for the event.
"Omg we won congrats Taylor highly deserved," one fan said.
"SWIFTIES WE DID IT WE WON!!! OMG," another fan said.
"Interrupting the night just to say congratulations to Taylor for Song of the Summer and Best Collaboration AND TO SAY LOOK HOW GORGEOUS SHE IS??? OH WOOOW TAYLOR SWIFT THE WOMAN YOU ARE," another fan commented.
“Everything that happens tonight falls behind that”- Taylor Swift reflects on the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 attack while accepting the VMA
As Taylor Swift accepted the award for her song at the VMAs, she reflected upon the 9/11 attacks. She noted how it had been 23 years since the terrorist attack took place on New York’s World Trade Center. Taylor said:
“Waking up this morning in New York on September 11, I’ve just been thinking about what happened 23 years ago — everyone who lost a loved one and everyone that we lost. And that is the most important thing about today. And everything that happens tonight falls behind that.”
On the other hand, the VMAs were initially scheduled to be held on September 10, 2024. However, the awards were pushed one day ahead as the VMA organizers didn't want to clash with the presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. Previously, in a statement, MTV said:
“In observance of the 23rd anniversary of 9/11, MTV will again support the nonprofit 9/11 Day, which organises the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance and Tuesday’s Children, which serves the families of 9/11.”
Furthermore, Taylor Swift became one of the most celebrated stars of the evening at the award function. Reportedly, she became the solo singer to get the most VMAs wins, as well as the most Video of the Year wins.
Having won in seven categories, Taylor Swift now holds 30 VMAs over her career, surpassing Beyonce’s record of 26 wins as a solo artist. Swift won the award for Song of the Summer, Best Collaboration, Artist of the Year, Best Pop, Best Direction, Best Editing, and Video of the Year for Fortnight.
