Kenyatta Blake, aka Buckshot, has broken his silence after a recent assault left him hospitalized. In a statement to All Hip Hop on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, the rapper confirmed the attack, adding it was carried out by "unauthorized occupants" on a property he owned in the Flatbush neighborhood.
In his statement, Blake, a member of hip-hop groups Black Moon and Boot Camp Clik, thanked his fans and well-wishers. Expressing his frustration that the assault happened in his hometown, Buckshot said:
"As someone who’s been an entertainer and part of this community for over 30 years, I am deeply disturbed that such an incident could happen in New York—a city I love and call home. Violence like this has no place here, and I’m calling on everyone to come together to make New York safer and better for all of us."
Last week, a video showing the rapper on his knees on the sidewalk asking for an ambulance in his Brooklyn neighborhood, began circulating online. The clip showed the Duck Down Music co-founder beaten and bloody. He was rushed to the hospital.
Buckshot asserts he would take legal action against the violence
In his statement, Buckshot told All Hip Hop that the assault stemmed from "ongoing disputes over (his) property" in Flatbush, Brooklyn, NY. He claimed that "multiple individuals armed with weapons, including handguns," attacked him. The rapper explained that he was the "rightful owner of the property but had been facing issues with "unauthorized occupants," who resorted to violence.
The Who Got the Props? hitmaker assured his fans that he was fine, stating:
"I am currently recovering from my injuries and am working closely with my legal team and law enforcement to ensure this matter is handled properly."
Reiterating his gratitude for the well wishes, he called for an end to violence.
"We are committed to seeing justice served, and I ask for your patience and support as the legal process unfolds. Again, thank you for all the well wishes. Let’s put an end to violence and help rebuild a stronger, safer New York."
Record label Duck Down Music, which Buckshot co-founded with Drew "Dru-Ha" Friedman, released a statement on X on Tuesday. The company stated that the assault took place on October 28, adding that the Brooklyn rapper has since been released from the hospital. It assured fans that he was "doing OK and recovering."
Further, the statement urged users to help stop the video from spreading by issuing "takedown notices" across social media platforms or any other site where it is circulating.
Buckshot hails from Brooklyn, New York. He is best known for founding hip-hop groups Black Moon (with Kasim "5ft" Reid and record producer Ewart "DJ Evil Dee" Dewgrade) and Boot Camp Clik.
Black Moon debuted in 1992 with the single Who Got Da Props. It became an underground hit and was later featured on their debut album, Enta da Stage. Both were met with critical success and have become influential in the industry.
In 1994, Blake formed Duck Down Management (now Duck Down Music, Inc.) with Drew "Dru-Ha" Friedman. Buckshot, along with Duck Down Management artists Smif-N-Wessun, Heltah Skeltah, and the trio O.G.C. (Starang Wondah, Louieville Sluggah, and Top Dog), formed the supergroup Boot Camp Clik in 1997.
There have been no further updates on the rapper's condition at this time.
