Lauryn Hill has once again come under scrutiny after she made concertgoers wait till 3 a.m. local time for her show in Nairobi. AllHipHop reported that the show was further filled with sound issues that bothered fans who attended the event.
On Sunday, September 29, Lauryn Hill was expected to headline the second day of the Walker Town festival in Kenya's capital city. The delay had later prompted frustrated fans to take to social media and bash the artist. The concert went on till 5 a.m. local time, after starting two hours before that.
Here are some of the popular reactions found on X, formerly known as Twitter:
Another X user said:
"Whole team is at fault. it’s best to hold EVERYONE accountable."
"Waking up to read that Lauryn Hill performed at 3am and with very poor sound hence struggled and that Nyashinki didn’t even perform makes me wanna laugh," added a tweet.
"Tonight in Walker Town, Lauryn Hill told Kenyans, 'Ready or not, here I don't come,'" explained a tweet.
Several other fans who were excited to witness Hill perform, took to X and expressed their opinions. One user wrote:
"We tried to stay, but sleep and work tomorrow had us walking out of the #WalkerTown concert."
"I am about to leave now. It is f**** unacceptable," exclaimed another netizen.
"Would have loved to attend this show but given Lauryn Hill's reputation, I didn't think it would have been prudent to make that Nairobi trip," commented a user.
The EABL will refund all the ticket holders for the second day of the event that included Lauryn Hill's performance
Lauryn already has the reputation of making late appearances at her own concerts or even canceling them in the last minute. Earlier this year, she along with The Fugees canceled their North American leg of the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill Anniversary Tour, just some time before it was scheduled to begin.
Back then, Hill blamed negative press and "clickbait headlines" for making people become reluctant to purchase the tickets, thus, leading to the sales going down rapidly. At the time, Pras also shared his opinion on the sudden cancelation. He then told TMZ:
"I saved her reputation for 20 years by not telling my side of the story. But oops… cat’s out the bag."
As for the latest delay in the Nairobi concert, the organizers, The East African Breweries Limited (EABL) announced full refund for the second day of the event. On Monday, they issued a statement claiming that heavy rains caused such disruption at the concert.
EABL stated:
"This resulted in the delayed performance by Miss Lauryn Hill and, regrettably, the cancellation of our brand partner Nyashinski’s performance, which deeply impacted the overall festival experience."
They further mentioned:
"This is a reflection of our commitment to fairness and respect for the trust you placed in us."
The organizers further expressed apology to all the concertgoers who were eagerly waiting for the performances on Sunday. This announcement, however, didn't stop the frustrated attendees from taking to social media platforms and bash the Ex-Factor singer.
