American singer-songwriter, actor, and Army veteran Kris Kristofferson recently passed away at 88. On Saturday, September 28, he passed away at his residence on the Hawaiian island of Maui. Making the news public, his family's spokesperson, Ebie McFarland, emailed the Associated Press.

According to McFarland, Kristofferson passed away quietly in his family's presence. However, the cause of his death wasn’t provided. Additionally, informing his fans and admirers, his family further wrote on Facebook on September 29:

"It is with a heavy heart that we share the news our husband/father/grandfather, Kris Kristofferson, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 28, at home. We're all so blessed for our time with him. Thank you for loving him all these many years, and when you see a rainbow, know he's smiling down at us all."

As per U.S. Department of Defense's March 23, 2021 article, Kristofferson played football and rugby and boxed for the Golden Gloves in college.

He also flew helicopters as a captain in the US Army. However, he later declined a position as a teacher at the US Military Academy in West Point, New York, to concentrate on his songwriting career in Nashville.

Kris Kristofferson is a well-known actor and singer-songwriter. He is also an army veteran, a Rhodes Scholar, and an accomplished collegiate athlete. According to The Vogue, born in Brownsville, Texas, Kristofferson is the son of Mary Ann and Lars Henry Kristofferson, an officer in the United States Army Air Corps.

Henry encouraged Kristofferson to enlist in the military as a little boy. As a result, in the 1960s, he enlisted in the Army. Speaking on the same topic, he stated in an AP interview in 2006:

"I was in ROTC in college, and it was just taken for granted in my family that I'd do my service. From my background and the generation I came up in, honor and serving your country were just taken for granted. So, later, when you come to question some of the things being done in your name, it was particularly painful."

The same source stated that following his enlistment in the Army, the legend trained as a helicopter pilot at Fort Rucker, Alabama. He also completed Ranger School, a physically demanding military program.

News Veteran Of The Day also stated that at the beginning of the 1960s, he created a band while serving with the 8th Infantry Division in West Germany. During his tenure, he attained the rank of captain.

In addition, as per The Vogue, following his tour in Germany in 1965, Kristofferson received an opportunity to teach literature at West Point. However, as he was more interested in music, he quit the Army in the same year to focus on becoming a songwriter.

Later, during the 2003 American Veterans Awards ceremony, he won the Veteran of the Year Award because of his military service.

After leaving the army, Kristoffer Kristofferson became a full-time singer-songwriter

Billboard wrote in their September 29 article that after the army, Kris Kristofferson succeeded as an actor, songwriter, and country singer. Some of his famous songs include Me and Bobby McGee, For the Good Times, Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down, and Help Me Make It Through the Night.

The Highwaymen, a country music group that included Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kristofferson, was a major creative force behind the outlaw country music movement.

This movement rejected the established Nashville country music machine, favoring independent songwriting and production.

The source further stated that later, due to his success in music, Kris Kristofferson landed 119 roles in cinema, including those in the Blade trilogy, the third A Star Is Born remake, and the History Channel miniseries Texas Rising.

In addition, Kristofferson received more than 48 Broadcast Music Inc. (BMI) country and pop honors. In 1985, he was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

On the other hand, once the news of his death went public, his fans and admirers took to X to pay tribute to the legend.
