Videos of Lauryn Hill performing at her high school reunion surfaced online on August 26. The 49-year-old was seen belting out the lyrics of Fugees’ ‘96 hit Ready or Not.
Lauryn's appearance comes after weeks of abrupt cancelation of the US leg of her Miseducation Anniversary Tour with Fugees. The tour was slated to start on August 9 but was called off three days prior.
The high school reunion for New Jersey's Columbia High School's '85 to '95 batches was held on August 10, as seen on the Instagram page Columbia High School MLK Reunion created for event-related information. Two locations were picked for the celebration.
The event's first half, from 11 am to 5 pm, was held at South Valley BBQ, and the latter half, from 8 pm to 12 am, was held at Llewellyn Parq Bar and Grill in West Orange.
Several people who attended the reunion shared snippets of Lauryn Hill's performances, with everyone around her cheerfully joining the singer in harmony.
As soon as those clips began circulating online on Monday, fans shared their reactions, with some joking about her habit of being late to shows.
"Was she late?", asked one X user.
"She showed up a year late and sang to the wrong reunion", wrote one person, likely referring to Lauryn's absence from the 'Sister Act 2' reunion in June.
Meanwhile, some claimed the people at the union must have been shocked to see Lauryn join the celebration.
"I know this was A VIBEEE", wrote another.
"Know They Was Shooketh fr", joked one person.
"nice to hear her perform the original versions", another remarked.
"I know that whole class main line was "you know I went to school with Lauryn Hill?"", said another.
Lauryn Hill's surprise high school reunion performance following Pras' remarks
At the CHS reunion, Lauryn was also seen performing Ex-Factor from her solo debut album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. The song was supposedly meant as a tribute to Ife Mtume, one of their late alums.
At one point of singing Ready or Not, joined by the entire crowd, Lauryn improvised the lyrics to honor her high school as she sang:
"CHS taking over!/ The Buffalo Soldier, dreadlock Rasta."
Lauryn expressed her love for everyone mid-performance, asserting, "I love you all so much!"
The singer's schoolmates were visibly delighted to have her there. Some members swiftly clicked some photos with Lauryn and praised her later on Instagram for her powerhouse performance and captivating presence. Donna Marie Schiele wrote on her Instagram post shared on August 11:
"Our girl @mslaurynhill was in rare form! Impromptu concert!"
Last week, fellow Fugees member Pras empathized with fans' discontent and disappointment with Lauryn and the group over the cancelation of their North American tour dates. In an interview with Vulture published on August 21, Pras was asked about his new single, Bar Mitzfa, in which he supposedly threw shade at Lauryn.
The 51-year-old rapper said "internal disagreements" are common between people one considers one's family. However, Pras denied "dissing" Lauryn.
Lauryn Hill addressed the cancelation of the tour dates in an Instagram post on August 8. She wrote that the media sensationalized her calling off some shows last year due to an injury, which made people skeptical about purchasing tickets for the North American tour. This led to low ticket sales, which prompted her to cancel the shows.
