South African singer Tyla recently revealed she caught someone trying to secretly record her during a conversation. The 22-year-old took to her X on Monday, December 16, 2024, to write:
"Talking to me while secretly recording is so weird… I can see the lens bby."
As the post went viral, internet users were quick to react. Many jokingly suggested that rapper Latto must have been the one secretly recording, referencing the latter artist releasing a photo conversation with Nicki Minaj in 2022.

Tyla is the youngest African artist in history to win a Grammy
Tyla Laura Seethal hails from Johannesburg, South Africa. She gained prominence in the country with her debut single, Getting Late (2019). A video was released in 2021 that amassed several million views on YouTube.
The singer rose to international fame with her 2023 single, Water. The track was the first song by a South African soloist to enter the Hot 100 chart (U.S.). It earned Tyla a Grammy (first of its kind) for Best African Music Performance. She is the youngest African artist in history to win a Grammy.
Water also won Tyla an MTV Video Music Award, two BET Awards, and three MTV Europe Music Awards. Last week, the song won her two Billboard Music Awards: Top Afrobeats Artist and Top Afrobeats Song.
The South African singer is known to infuse pop and amapiano genres in her music. Several local publications, including the Daily Maverick, have dubbed her the Queen of Popiano.
Tyla dropped her self-titled debut album in March 2024, which was met with critical acclaim. It debuted in the top 25 on the Billboard 200 and in the top 10 on the Top R&B Albums chart.
More on Nicki Minaj and Latto's beef
In October 2022, the Recording Academy moved Nicki Minaj's track Super Freaky Girl from the rap to the pop category for the 2023 Grammy Awards ballot. The rapper expressed her disappointment at the move during an Instagram Live session, calling it unfair.
In the video, Minaj questioned the Recording Academy's categorizing method, bringing up songs like Drake's Hotline Bling (in 2017, it was nominated in the rap category despite Drizzy saying it was pop) and Latto's Big Energy being eligible for the rap category.
While she also brought up other artists like Adele, Post Malone, Doja Cat, and Harry Styles, Minaj kept circling back to Latto. In response, Latto jumped on X to call out Minaj, sparking a back-and-forth. This included Minaj posting a screenshot of her text exchange with Latto and the latter posting an audio of her phone conversation with Nicki.
Latto has not publicly reacted to comments under Tyla's post.
