Bronx rapper Fat Joe (born Joseph Antonio Cartagena) recently got candid about his Grammy loss to Chance the Rapper in 2017, declaring that he believes he should've won the award. Chance the Rapper (featuring Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz) won the Grammy for Best Rap Performance for their song No Problem.
The other nominees were Desiigner (Panda), Drake featuring The Throne (pop Style), Fat Joe and Remy Ma featuring French Montana and Infrared (All The Way Up), ScHoolboy Q featuring Kanye West (That Part).
In a recent interview (published by XXL Magazine on December 11), Fat Joe opined that the Grammy was 'robbed' from him in 2017.
"We got robbed," he said and went on to quote Jay-Z, saying, “And then we lost ‘All the Way Up’ to Chance The Rapper. Like that’s the biggest disrespect… you know how Jay-Z used to say, ‘Gotta learn to live with regrets,’ I can’t live with that one.”
Released on March 2, 2016, by RNG and EMPIRE, All the Way Up was the first single from Plata O Plomo - a collaborative album by Fat Joe and Remy Ma. On the US Billboard Hot 100 list, the song peaked at number 27, marking Fat Joe's first entry in the top 40 since his 2007 chart-buster I Won't Tell featuring J. Holiday.
In France, the song peaked at number 85, becoming Fat Joe's first chart entry since What's Luv (2002), which was created in collaboration with Ashanti. The song was also certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for selling equivalent units of over three million copies in sales and streaming numbers.
The song also had an accompanying music video that was released on March 26, 2016. It featured Remy Ma's husband Papoose, Fred, DJ Khaled, Farid Bang, and the Godson. The music video has over 266 million views on YouTube at present.
When Fat Joe stated that he didn't even remember Chance the Rapper's Grammy-winning song
During a November 2022 interview with GQ, Fat Joe opened up about his 2017 Grammy loss to Chance the Rapper to interviewer Elliott Wilson. According to the Loyalty rapper, he didn't remember Chance the Rapper's Grammy-winning song No Problem.
The 54-year-old further opined that the Academy wasn't aware of the 'culture.'
“I should have won the Grammy for Best Rap Performance 2017. Chance is a cool guy. But the Grammy should have come my way. “All the Way Up” was bigger,” Fat Joe insisted. “Not only that, if people understood the culture, Remy and I were like Robin Hood and Cinderella. They could have done the ‘hood a favor and given “All the Way Up,” the f**kin’ Grammy.
He continued, saying:
They gave it to Chance the Rapper—and for what? I’m not going to be disrespectful, but they gave it to him for a record I don’t even know no more.”
The Bronx rapper also alluded to his 2005 Grammy loss to Black Eyed Peas, who beat him and Remy Ma's Lean Back and Let's Get It Started.
"Same thing happened to us with “Lean Back.” We lost Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group in 2005 to, what’s these guys? What’s the guy with the girl, Fergie?” he concluded.
Released as the second single from Terror Squad's studio album True Story, Lean Back was a chart-topping song that stayed atop the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks and topped the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart for seven weeks.
