Explaining Celine Dion's 2018 track Ashes

Canadian singer Celine Dion recorded Ashes, about six years back, for the Marvel movie Deadpool 2. The track came out as the film's lead single on May 3. The music video was dropped on the same day as well. Both director David Leitch and actor Ryan Reynolds believed in the idea of having a music video for the song, while Leitch wasn't sure in the beginning.

Leitch initially wanted the track to be a part of the movie, where the audience could discover it gradually. However, it was later made a part of the marketing campaign of the film. The music video became extremely popular within a day of its release, after garnering more than 2 million views.

In 2018, David Leitch spoke to Entertainment Weekly and shared details about what went behind the making of this popular music video. In the interview, he said,

"I needed a song in the movie and I wanted a ballad that was thematic."

He further explained the marketing people's reaction that they had when they first got to know what Leitch intended to do in the music video.

"But to do the music video, we got marketing involved, and... their first reaction was, ‘Excuse me, what do you guys want to do?’ ‘Well, we want to shoot a music video... It’s Céline Dion singing this melodramatic song, and Deadpool’s going to dance an interpretive dance... and there you go.’ And they were like, 'Uh, okay.'"

Leitch added the track wasn't just for Deadpool, but all the other characters. He further believed that it wasn't something that people were expecting out of him. According to the Deadpool 2 director, it was Ryan Reynolds who first suggested that Celine Dion would be the perfect choice for the song.

Upon being asked about his experience of dwelling in the making of a ballad music video, David Leitch revealed it was "incredibly fun."
