Toronto rapper Top5, also known as Hassan Ali, excited fans by announcing a podcast with Drake on his Kick account. Recently freed on September 23 after three years in custody for first-degree murder charges, Top5 revealed he plans to play Kendrick Lamar's diss track Not Like Us during the podcast, where he and Drake will analyze the song.
He said:
"We're gonna play the Not Like Us video and we're gonna look at every n*gga in the video and we're gonna do homework."
Not Like Us is one of the most popular diss tracks coming out of the recently smothered beef between rappers Drizzy and Kendrick Lamar. Considered by many hip-hop fanatics as one of the most iconic beefs in history, Kendrick and Drizzy incessantly launched personal attacks on one another until the brawl smothered with the release of Drake's The Heart Part 6.
A brief history of the iconic clash between Kendrick Lamar and Drake
Kendrick Lamar and Drake's beef started way back in 2013 when Lamar featured in Big Sean's Control and he name-called Drizzy in the song.
Fast forward to 2023, Drake and J. Cole released First Person Shooter in which the latter called himself, Drizzy, and Kendrick Lamar a part of the 'Big Three'. K Dot responded to the claims with Like That in 2024.
In April, Drake announced himself as a contender in the newly rekindled beef with tracks Push Ups and Taylor Made Freestyle. However, the latter was taken down from the internet after Tupac Shakur's estate threatened legal action against Drizzy for alleged use of AI-generated vocals resembling Tupac.
In response, Kendrick Lamar released Euphoria on April 30 and 6.16 in LA on May 4. Drizzy replied with Family Matters in which he attacked Lamar, calling him out for alleged domestic violence and claiming that his children are fathered by Dave Free.
Less than an hour later, Meet the Grahams was dropped by Lamar in which he accused Drizzy of being a s*x trafficker, and also having a secret child. The next day, K Dot released one of the most iconic songs coming out of the brawl, Not Like Us.
The track doubled down on the allegations made in Meet The Grahams while further accusing Drake of pedophilia and hailing him responsible for ruining rap culture.
On May 5, Lamar released The Heart Part 6 where he refuted the allegations and claimed that his team had fed wrong information to Lamar to derail the rapper.
A music video for Not Like Us was also released on July 4.
Rapper Top5 seemingly thanks Drake for bearing his lawyer's fees after being released from prison
On Monday, September 23, Top5 was released from prison after two years in custody. The rapper had his murder charge stayed by the Crown in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.
Posting a picture with his lawyer Gary Grill on Instagram, the rapper expressed his gratitude to him and Drake. He also revealed that Drizzy had paid for his lawyer expenses.
"Shoutout big bro @champagnepapi for the Lawyer Fees & Gary Grill for being the best lawyer in Toronto. #ALLAHUAKBAR," wrote Top5 in the caption.
However, he quickly edited the caption, which now thanks only the lawyer without any reference to Drake, aka @champagnepapi.
Top5 was arrested in 2021 for the death of 20-year-old accounting student Hashim Omar Hashi. Initially charged as an accessory, his charge was later upgraded to first-degree murder. He was arrested in Ontario two weeks after Hashi's death.
On Monday, September 23, the judge disallowed Top5's social media posts to be used as evidence against the rapper in the case, thereby suspending the case.
Talking about his client after the stay order, Grill said (via CBC):
"The problem about prosecuting artists like Mr. Ali based on their music is it fails to understand what the medium is, what it's about, and how drillers approach their audiences. It's important for all drillers to portray themselves as the biggest, baddest gangsters on the planet. That's what sells. That's what all drillers are doing."
After the stay ruling, the court will have a year from now to restart the proceedings.
