Elton John, the British singer and songwriter recently shared his thoughts on his decision to retire from touring after the end of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, in July last year.
On June 27, 2024, the 77-year-old artist appeared in an interview with Entertainment Tonight along with his husband David Furnish. The artist reflected on the day of the final show of his 5-year tour and shared the delight he felt because it ended exactly how he wanted it to. He said:
"The last show in Stockholm on the farewell tour after Glastonbury. I got in the car and went: 'Yes! yes!' We went out on the biggest high, just the way I wanted to, and there's no going back [after] that."
Although Elton John is done with touring, he has reportedly recorded a “surprise” new album, according to Rolling Stone UK. It will be the singer’s 32nd studio album.
Elton John and husband David Furnish reveal the reason behind the decision to stop touring
Elton John and filmmaker David Furnish first met at a dinner party thrown by a mutual friend in 1993 and went on their first date the next day. They tied the knot in a small ceremony at their Windsor estate in Berkshire on December 21, 2014. The pair share two children Zachary, 13, and Elijah, 11.
Elton John and David had a sit-down with Entertainment Tonight where they spoke about the singer's 5-year tour Farewell Yellow Brick Road that commenced in Allentown, Pennsylvania, US, on 8 September 2018 and had the last show in Stockholm, Sweden, on 8 July 2023.
It was the 49th concert tour of Elton's career and on the last day, the star told the crowd it had been “52 years of pure joy.” When the interviewer asked them if John had any inclination towards going on tour again in the future, the singer answered with a decisive, "No." While Furnish added:
"We’ve got our sons, you know. They're getting into their teenage years now. We don't want to miss anything. We want to be present for that. It's sort of a key decade in a child's life. He's been doing it for like 60 years. So it's nice to have that time to spend at home with family."
David Furnish also shared the moments of Elton John's final concert on his Instagram. He posted a video of him and the pair’s sons waving near the stage during the show in Stockholm. He wrote in the caption:
“And off he goes … 🚀 One final trip down the Yellow Brick Road 💫 330 shows under his belt 💪🏼🎹 Finally off the road and into the sunset 🌈☀️. So excited for the next chapter together 👨👨👦👦 We love you Daddy ❤️.”
