On December 3, The 1975's frontman Matty Healy was engaged in a heated online exchange with rapper Azealia Banks, which ended with Healy threatening to slap Banks. This online clash is the latest in a chain of fiery tirades between the two artists.
The argument started when Healy came to Charli XCX's defense after Banks criticized the latter's looks. She initially posted on X:
“Charli used to be soooo pretty. Ugh. Boaaa, I swear them Weho gays be having the girls questioning themselves meanwhile they all scraping k off a cookie sheet, eating cold bossanova and sharing panties. Tuh.”
Healy, who is the bandmate of Charli XCX's fiance George Daniel, fired back with a response on X.
"All the women you attack seem to be culturally relevant, attractive, divisive and NICE people. I think this makes you jealous cos you're so talented but everything else about you is a failure. Just rap bro," tweeted Matty Healy.
However, things escalated when Azealia Banks compared Matty Healy to Frankenstein. The latter threatened to slap Banks in a now-deleted tweet, writing:
"I know you think your life is some episode of the library is open but I am not the one. Talk to me like that I’m not gonna side eye you at an awards do I'll f**king slap you so hard I'll get a Guiness world record for the highest a rat some b***h calls a wig has ever flown."
However, he was quick to acknowledge that his reaction was inappropriate and retracted his words. The 1975 frontman tweeted:
"Nah I can't be saying I'm gonna hit a girl that's insane I'm sorry. You just can't keep being so mean about my mates and my mrs it's really hurtful gets me well defensive."
Healy subsequently deleted the threatening tweet, claiming that it wasn't right to say something like that even when he was angry.
Azealia Banks once lambasted Matty Healy over his reaction to comments made on Ice Spice
Azealia Banks once slammed Matty Healy for laughing at controversial comments targeting Bronx rapper Ice Spice. In a February 9, 2023 appearance on the Adam Friedland Podcast, Healy and host Friedland made comments on Ice Spice's body and her heritage.
They called her a "Chubby Chinese lady" and an "Inuit Spice Girl." The comments caused widespread backlash among fans and other juggernauts in the industry.
On May 30, 2023, Azealia Banks took to her Instagram handle to share a post by Billboard on Matty Healy and Ice Spice. It claimed that The 1975 frontman thinks that the controversy "doesn't actually matter." In a lengthy post on her Instagram status, Banks wrote:
“Does Matt Healy know that no one thinks The 1975 makes good music and that he’s a lame poser with a trash cliche band name that actually means nothing. He’s clearly so pressed that a black girl who knows nothing about him or his music is making more moves and more money than him. Does he know that black women are more coveted in the industry because there’s BIG BUSINESS in female rap."
She also labeled Matty Healy as someone who was "weak on the knees" and an "outrageous small white opinionated male musician." Praising Ice Spice, she wrote:
"You're not a star, nor are you good at whatever this crappy a** mid-2000's indie pitchfork darling fantasy you're trying to sell. Ice Spice has MILES more originality, than you will ever. The 1975 is on nobody's radar babe, maybe fat emo teenagers but no... we are not checkin for you boo"
At that time, rumors of a romantic relationship between Taylor Swift and Matty Healy dominated tabloids. In a separate Instagram story, Azealia Banks slammed Healy further and implored Taylor Swift to leave him.
“Taylor, this guy is gonna give you scabies. He’s not on the level of powerful p**s u worked hellaa hard to build,” she wrote.
The rapper further advised her to collaborate with James Mercer from The Shins instead of Matty Healy.
“James Mercer is honestly one of the best lyricists ever. Ugh this dude (Matty Healy) sis a full incel. You cannot be letting him climb the rich white c*****e mountain sis.”
Rumors of a relationship between Taylor Swift and Healy first came to light in early May of 2023, weeks after Swift's split with former beau Joe Alwyn. However, they never officially confirmed their relationship. The 14-time Grammy winner is currently dating Travis Kelce, while Healy is engaged to Gabbriette Bechtel.
