Chappell Roan's uniquely coined word "Femininomenon" has been co-opted by US Vice President Kamala Harris. Her official TikTok page shared a meme featuring her and Republican nominee Donald Trump set to Roan's hit song. The meme showed alternating pictures of Trump and Harris as the bridge and chorus of Femininomenon played in the background, with Roan singing:
"Well, what we really need is a femininomenon/(A what?) A femininomenon/ (Hit it like) Hit it like rom-pom-pom-pom/ (Get it hot) Get it hot like Papa John/ (Make a b***h) Make a b***h go on and on/ (It's a fem) It's a femininomenon."
Femininomenon is the opening song from Chappell Roan's debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. The song is a commentary on online dating culture and gender stereotypes faced by women in heteronormative relationships.
Femininomenon as explained by Chappell Roan
In the January 16, 2024 episode of Capital Buzz's Making The Album, Chappell Roan explained the meaning behind Femininomenon, a portmanteau of 'feminine' and 'phenomenon.' Roan stated:
"We just kind of obviously made the word up. But it was about like how it’s a phenomenon if like sleeping with a man is better than sleeping with a girl, from my perspective, at least. So I was like, 'It’s a phenomenon, but it’s also feminine.' And so we just kind of mushed it together."
Chappell Roan also elaborated on the difficulty of writing the song, adding that it felt like three songs in one track. Femininomenon starts slow and soothing, with Roan expressing her frustration about online dating with the line, "I'm so sick of online love." The track's beat picks up once it hits the pre-chorus with the lyrics:
"Hit it like, get it hot/ Make a b***h, it's a fem/ Hit it like, get it hot/ Make a b***h, it's a—/ Um, can you play a song with a f***ing beat?"
The song is also a rally for female empowerment, with Roan emphasizing the need for a "Femininomenon" because women know what they need, and so do men, but they never acknowledge it.
In a March 2023 Teen Vogue interview, Chappell Roan said her fans found the song "jarring" when it was first released. However, the track gained traction once she performed it live for the first time.
