On July 5, 2024, Sophia Momodu, the baby mother of Afrobeats artist Davido's first child, filed a defense in a lawsuit. She did that in response to another lawsuit filed by the Nigerian singer seeking custody of their daughter, Aurora Imade Adeleke.
David Adeleke's ex-girlfriend Sophia Momodu urged the Lagos State High Court not to give the musician custody of their child in her defense lawsuit. She went on to say that the musician abandoned his daughter's financial responsibilities because Sophia allegedly refused to be his s*x slave.
Sophia further urged the court on Friday, stating that the applicant was unfit to have custody of their daughter because he was unreliable and unable to provide her with the necessary care.
This was mentioned in a counter-affidavit she submitted on Friday in response to Davido's suit for custody on April 17. Through her legal team, the 102-paragraph counter-affidavit was submitted.
Davido and Sophia Momodu are fighting for the custody of their daughter Imade Adeleke
Afrobeat singer David Adeleke, better known by his stage name Davido, and his former girlfriend Sophia Momodu are currently battling in court over the custody of their daughter, Imade Adeleke.
On Friday, July 5, 2024, the separated couple showed up before Justice Bashua's family court for the start of the custody hearing in response to the Afrobeats musician's April lawsuit.
Momodu was named the only respondent in the motion, which the singer's attorneys submitted to the Lagos State High Court on April 17, 2024.
The filing claimed that the demands made by the mother of the first child were meant to thwart his attempts to see Imade. The artist said he had been paying Imade's school expenses, giving her transportation, and even housing as part of his paternal duties over the years.
However, in response to this, Momodu asserted in a statement that contrary to what Davido said, he had neglected their child for the last two years. She further claimed that the artist had also abandoned his financial responsibilities to his daughter, leaving her responsible for paying all living and travel expenses, rent, medical bills, and other associated charges.
On the other hand, Davido recently said that he only wanted joint parenting. On July 6, he took to X to publicly state the same thing.
Additionally, Davido also had issues with Sophia's frequent mention of his son's death in 2022. Addressing the same, he took to X on the same day and wrote:
“Your constantly bringing up the death of my child at any point u can to just remind us of this tragedy that haunts us everyday of our lives .. ”
Moreover, the Nigerian singer has requested a court order giving him the joint custody of Imade and unrestrained access to her. Davido sought these to maintain active involvement in his daughter's life.
On the other hand, Momodu's legal team argued her case in court on Friday, laying out for the judge why the artist was unfit to have custody of Imade. Additionally, Momodu refuted the claims, stating that Davido hasn’t met their daughter since July 2022 out of his "own choice."
Momodu further informed the court that as the artist had not paid the child's tuition, the child had been on the verge of being sent home from school. She also claimed that even during their relationship, Davido never truly exhibited his love or commitment to his daughter.
“He always used the condition of my making myself available for his s*xual pleasures, as a pre-condition to visit our daughter or show some fatherly love to her," she revealed.
The statement further stated:
“The applicant has always been known to go away and stop communicating with our daughter, to stop making payment for school fees and/or payment of maintenance for our daughter, whenever I refused his sexual advances.”
No judgment has been made as of yet and the next hearing date hasn’t been made public at the time of writing.
