Fergie faced severe backlash in 2018 after her performance of The Star-Spangled Banner at an NBA All-Star game was criticized for being too slow and breathy. Social media users slammed the singer for her rendition of the song, forcing her to come up with an apology days later.
Netizens trolled the singer on social media after the performance, and journalists noticed that many NBA players couldn't stop chuckling when they heard her live at the event. Netizens on X (formerly Twitter) even compared her voice to that of Marlyn Monroe, when she sang Happy Birthday to President Kennedy.
The debacle forced the singer to apologize, who earnestly pleaded with the Americans to excuse her attempt to be novel and creative on the night of the NBA All-Star game.
Fergie referred to herself as a 'risk-taker', acknowledging that her risk had backfired. Finally, Fergie did her best to make people understand that she was as patriotic as any quintessential American. She explained in a February 2018 interview with TMZ and said:
"I've always been honored and proud to perform the national anthem and last night I wanted to try something special for the NBA. I'm a risk taker artistically, but clearly this rendition didn't strike the intended tone. I love this country and honestly tried my best,"
6 years later, the baton seems to have been passed on to Ingrid Andress. Her performance of the National Anthem at the MLB Home Run Derby on July 15, is being allegedly considered by many as one of the worst performances in history.
After Fergie, Ingrid Andress apologises for singing the National Anthem drunk
Ingrid Andress stuttered throughout her performance of the Star-Spangled Banner before the start of the MLB Home Run Derby. The live footage of her performance showed the Blue singer seemingly disoriented as she fumbled her way through the entire song, missing most of the notes.
On July 15, the singer revealed the real reason for her disoriented performance via a post on Instagram. Ingrid shared that she was drunk and issued a public apology to the players, fans, and the MLB as a whole. The singer confessed that she would enroll in a rehabilitation center to get further help.
Not everyone slammed the Blue singer. In fact, the famous country duo Brothers Osborne defended her and highlighted Andress' top-notch singing talent that had taken the backseat, because of the national anthem fiasco.
Fergie and Andress aren't the only two big names who have seemingly messed up their national anthem performance at a bigshot event. In fact, Roseanne Barr's version of The Star-Spangled Banner was criticized by many people, when she sang it at a San Diego Padres game in 1990.
However, the singer defended herself by commenting that she was trying to sing a song and requested everyone to give her a 'break'.
