Mike Kalambay performed at the Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa, Congo on July 27, 2024. During the performance, however, tragedy struck, with a stampede causing the death of nine people and more injured, leading to the cancelation of the performance and the closure of the stadium.
According to news reporting, the singer was performing at the 80,000-capacity venue when overcrowding led to the stampede and the following death, including that of a ten-year-old child.
The stadium is now closed until further notice, and the Stade Tata Raphael venue was also closed. The incident has led to the start of an investigation, with the governor of Kinshasa blaming the incident on "excess crowd movements". More stringent crowd control policies are reportedly being implemented because of the incident.
The incident at the stadium was not an outlier, with a previous such incident having occurred in 2022 during a performance by Fally Ipupa, causing the death of 11 people and injuring dozens more.
