On Thursday night, during a gig in Boston, rapper Tyler, the Creator called out Taylor Swift's fandom after they apparently tried to cancel him over his old lyrics. After some Swifties reportedly called some of his old lyrics offensive, Tyler lashed out at them and called them "racists."
According to Forbes, it is unclear why some Swifties shared screenshots of Tyler's songs' lyrics. The outlet, however, reported that the controversy primarily began after the rapper briefly became the No. 1 artist on global Spotify, beating Taylor Swift. During his Boston show, Tyler, the Creator addressed the situation and said:
"I got Swifties all mad at me with their racist a*s — bringing up old lyrics, b*tch, go listen to 'Tron Cat,' I don’t give a f*ck b**ch."
He further added,
"They gonna bring out the old me."
Swifties had particularly referred to a few particular songs by the rapper, including Nightmare and Tron Cat, while allegedly criticising him on the internet.
While the rapper's lyrics previously were considered controversial, many critics like The New Yorker believed that he had "grown up" since then. In 2018, he launched Flower Boy, which sparked such reactions from critics and netizens.
On Sunday, October 27, at a listening event in Los Angeles, the rapper even said that he has changed from when he was 20.
Tyler the Creator said:
"I’m not the guy that I was at 20. Folks having kids and families and all I got is a new Ferrari. And it does feel kind of weird. I’m gaining weight, I’ve got gray hair on my chest, life is life-ing.”
Tyler the Creator was previously banned in the UK after being scrutinized for his lyrics
Tyler the Creator addressed Swifties during his Thursday concert in Boston and called them racist. The netizens cited a lot of songs that the rapper had released previously.
One of the songs that got mentioned a lot on social media was Tron Cat, in which the lyrics read:
"R*pe a pregnant b*tch and tell my friends I had a threesome..."
In another song titled Nightmare, the rapper was seen talking to his therapist about some intrusive thoughts. The lyrics of this song read:
"It's like I got a f*cking voice in my head/Tellin' me to do all this fucked up sh*t, man."
From Monday to Wednesday this week, Tyler the Creator topped the global artist list of Spotify, after the rapper released his latest album titled Chromakopia. On Thursday, Taylor Swift was again back on the top of the list, where she initially was before Tyler replaced her briefly.
Tyler has previously faced scrutiny for the lyrics of his tracks. In 2022, Variety reported his tracks to be "littered with violent, sexist, misogynistic and homophobic lyrics."
The rapper also experienced a ban in the UK back in 2015, which according to him, was based on his lyrics that came out in 2009. It seems like the rapper has come under scrutiny once again, since the old lyrics resurfaced on internet primarily by the Swifties.
