Ice Spice was "hysterically crying" when she got the news of Taylor Swift wanted to do a collaboration project with her. The 24-year-old's ascent in the Hollywood industry has been extremely quick and she has performed and collaborated with Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift, and others.
In a recent cover story of Rolling Stone magazine published on July 25, the rapper opened up about her bond with Taylor Swift. According to Ice Spice, Taylor Swift is her "closest celebrity friend" and they gel extremely well.
“Taylor f*cks with me. She’s so funny. I think our personalities mesh really well.”
She also gave a vivid description of her mental state when she first got to know that she would be doing a song with Taylor Swift. The two collaborated to release a remix version of Taylor Swift's song Karma for her album Midnights.
"Bro, this is not real life" — Ice Spice elaborated on her reaction when she was told about Taylor Swift's collaboration offer
Ice Spice revealed that she was in her first New Jersey apartment with her producer Riot when her manager suddenly called and gave her the news.
Initially, the rapper thought that he was calling to say something bad. When she finally got the news, the rapper tried her level best to keep calm and act "super cool." However, the moment she hung up, the rapper started shouting and crying out of jubilation.
“He’s [Ice's amanager] like, ‘Taylor Swift has a record for you to get on from her album.’ I’m playing it cool on the phone. I’m like, ‘Oh, that’s cool. Super cool.’ And then I hang up the phone, and I’m hysterically crying. I’m in my walk-in closet, and I’m like, ‘Bro, this is not real life.’ Riot definitely filmed it. That’ll probably be in a documentary one day.”
Ice Spice also took the opportunity to shut down the critics and netizens who opined that Taylor wanted to gain clout by riding on Spice's newfound popularity and therefore collaborated with her. The rapper explained that their personalities match and Taylor is her friend.
Taylor too had some kind words for the rapper as was published in the Rolling Stone cover story. The 14-time Grammy winner was delightfully surprised by Ice Spice's maturity and ability to handle fame the first time she met her.
Furthermore, she was impressed by Spice's interest in diving deep into the nuances of the music industry and not just restricting herself to the creative aspect of her art.
“I’ve seen how our industry tries to convince artists that they’re better off just being creative and making music and letting the labels and the management do the rest. Seeing Ice lean into the strategic, financial, and business aspects of her career is really exciting for me."
The Midnights singer ended her comments by summarizing the rapper's professional outlook in one line. According to Taylor, Ice didn't just want to be the passenger of her career, she aspired to be the driver of it.
Ice Spice released her latest album Y2K! on July 26 and it features a ten-song set with her old chart-busters like Phat Butt, Think U the Sh*t (Fart), and Gimmie a Light. Furthermore, the album also features collaborations with stars like Travis Scott, Central Cee, and Gunna.
