On Sunday, April 21, American singer, songwriter, model, poet, and actress Jill Scott took to X to shower praises on rapper Chris Brown, lauding his multiple talents. She directly referred to him and wrote –
“@chrisbrown is amazing. How does ANYBODY sing like THAT? Dance, look, Act, and Rap… like THAT? Beyond gifted. It appears, [that] exceptional people have to go through exceptional [fire emoji]. There’s nothing to debate.”
As soon as Jill Scott’s post emerged online, a section of social media users took issue with her statement, with many calling out The Light of the Sun songstress for seemingly supporting Chris Brown despite multiple abuse allegations he has faced over the years.
Others defended her saying she was just sharing her opinions on the Run It! rapper’s many talents, which had nothing to do with his personal life.
Jill Scott urges her followers to “pray for enlightenment” following her Chris Brown post
Over the weekend, Jill Scott found herself amid controversy after her X post on Chris Brown. She tagged the R&B artist and called him “amazing,” while also praising his plethora of talents including singing, dancing, acting, rapping, as well as appearance.
Scott further added that Brown was “beyond gifted” and there was nothing left to “debate” as “exceptional” individuals like him undergo similar issues in life.
Jill’s remarks left the internet divided, with many criticizing her and others showing her support. Her name is now trending across the platform.
People in the first category highlighted Chris Brown’s history of abuse allegations, including pleading guilty to domestic violence charges brought forth by his former partner and singer Rihanna, more than a decade and a half back.
For instance, a user with the handle @ChrissyLcsw wrote under Jill Scott’s post, “I think the women he’s abused would disagree.” In response, the Get on Up star shared a personal anecdote. She wrote –
“I doubt it. My Mother’s ex-husband was a mean, violent human AND he could lay foundation better than anyone in my city. What he did with cement was awe-inspiring. We got away. He got a raise and praise for his ability. God dealt with the rest.”
Likewise, another one of her 1.7 million followers wrote in the comments section, “I love you Jill but he has so many domestic abuse cases it’s ridiculous we can’t look past that.” Jill Scott went on to reply –
“I love you too. I’m not here to fight anymore else’s battles. If/since women hear the stories, they should avoid that street. Running backwards in moving traffic makes zero sense. Therapy for every d*mn body.”
In contrast, there were many who defended Jill Scott. @AgentAmulet wrote in the comments, “Y’all mad cause Jill Scott called Chris Brown talented? Is he not!?”
Similarly, @layasfanta wrote in a separate post that dragging the Woman hitmaker was unjustified, adding: “Y’all truly have to realize that not every artist is going to have the same opinion on him like y’all on social media do.”
In the wake of this, Jill Scott issued another statement. She wrote how it took her “years of prayer, therapy, self-reflection” to keep herself grounded and show compassion for other human beings. She added how people often go through and do terrible things, but that doesn’t make them all bad.
“We say we believe in God; pray for enlightenment. We ARE a living testimony,” she noted.
So far, Chris Brown has not commented on the matter. Meanwhile, he too has been trending over the weekend after releasing his diss track Weakest Link against fellow rapper Quavo amid their ongoing feud.
