American rapper Consequence recently appeared on Drink Champs’ YouTube podcast on December 2 and opened up about fellow rappers Talib Kweli and Kanye’s relationship. He further claimed that the Black Star rapper was hurt when Ye said that he didn’t like the way he rapped.
He further revealed that Talib Kweli held a grudge against Kanye because he allegedly never sent him a pair of Yeezys, Ye’s footwear brand. During the same podcast, referring to the comments made by Ye about Talib, he said:
“It's like, I never got no Yeezys. Yo, do you understand how ni*gas feel about shit like that? Rap ni*gas is worse than women, bro… I felt where he was coming from."
He further said:
"I did feel like that was a, he got snuffed when, when he didn't expect to hear that… You know what I'm saying? When you get that, when you get that hurtful truth, you get that hurtful truth…”"
This interview stemmed from something that happened 3 years ago. On November 4, 2021, during his appearance on Drink Champs, Kanye talked about Talib Kweli and expressed his disapproval of his rapping technique. He went on to say that another rapper, Common, is better. Talking about the same, he said:
“Oh, definitely Common. Are you—man … Common is a thousand times better rapper than Kweli. What is you talkin’ bout?”
Kanye West also opened up about his opinion on Talib Kweli
During the same Drink Champs podcast appearance, Ye opened up more about his feelings for Talib. He further said that:
“No, but also, Kweli be gettin’ up, and like, ‘come back home.’ Home where, ni*ga? … That’s my issue, man, and all these backhand—’oh yea, you know, Ye, he’s a billionaire, but f*ck him being a billionaire..”
He continued:
“If I be like you, Kweli, I’d be where you at. If you ask 99 percent of people, ‘Do you want to be Kweli or do you wanna be Ye?’ Most people are gonna wanna be Ye. I love Kweli. I never really liked the way he rapped.”
Now, as per Hiphop DX's September 14, 2022, report, after the interview went viral, during another fiery Drink Champs interview, Talib Kweli responded to Kanye West's disparaging remarks about him. The New York City native claimed that he wasn't very upset with Yeezy's cruel remarks because they created a lot of attention about him and he still adores his Get Em High colleague.
Talib then joked with fellow Black Star MC Yasiin Bey and Dave Chappelle and said:
“That was good time. It felt like having a hit record out. The way that I remember that ‘Get By’ was out. It reminded me of what Kanye mean to the culture. The hat shit was funny to me — it was hilarious.”
However, the Brooklyn native also said that he was a little taken aback by Kanye's remarks. This is because he had been hanging out with him at a Dave Chappelle stand-up show in New York City a month before the Drink Champs interview, and they were getting along well.
Kweli and West have known each other for a long time. His success as a solo artist included partnerships with fellow rappers like Kanye West. West also produced Kweli's first solo album, Quality, which was released in 2002. Kweli further appeared on Kanye West's song Get 'Em High, which was from his debut album, The College Dropout, in February 2004.
Nevertheless, after this podcast episode, neither Ye nor Talib Kweli said anything about the whole thing.
