Hip-hop heavyweight Lil Wayne has once again captured the spotlight, this time for expressing his interest in headlining the coveted 2025 Super Bowl halftime show.
On February 8, 2024, Lil appeared on YG‘s 4HUNNID podcast, where he candidly discussed his passion for the NFL and his desire to take center stage at the biggest annual sporting event in the United States. The rapper stated:
"I will not lie to you, I have not got a call. But we all praying, we keeping our fingers crossed."
The interview has reignited conversations on social media and within the hip-hop industry following the recent announcement by the NFL, Apple Music, and Roc Nation that Kendrick Lamar would headline the Super Bowl Halftime Show.
Lil Wayne showed interest in performing at the 2025 Super Bowl Halftime Show
Earlier this year, in a candid interview with Keenon Dequan Ray Jackson, better known as YG, Lil Wayne opened up about his dreams of performing at the Super Bowl, suggesting that he is "working hard."
"I’m working hard. I’m going to make sure this next album and everything I do is killer, so I’m going make it very hard for them to... I want to just make it hard for them not to highlight the boy," Lil said.
He further suggested that at events like these, decisions are typically based on an artist's legacy rather than the success of a single hit.
"And I thank God for the fact that, how we started this interview off with a 30 years of work so therefore when they look at stuff they be looking at that they look like what can they come out and do with a little hot single or something like man dude come out here," Lil added.
The interview went viral when, on Sunday, September 8, 2024, the Compton rapper was announced as the headliner for the 2025 Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show, scheduled for February 9, 2024, in New Orleans.
The announcement was made via Instagram, featuring Kendrick Lamar standing on a field in front of the huge United States flag. In a promotional clip, he said:
"My name's Kendrick Lamar and I'll be performing at Super Bowl LIX."
Nicki Minaj extends support to Lil Wayne on X
With the upcoming Super Bowl set to be held in New Orleans, Lil’s hometown, fellow rapper Nicki Minaj publicly addressed Jay Z on X, the figurehead of Roc Nation, for not selecting Lil Wayne to headline the halftime show as the event being held in his home city.
"Denying a young black man what he rightfully put into this game for no other reason but your ego," she wrote.
In a separate post on X, Nicki Minaj suggested that without Lil Wayne, the hip-hop culture would be dead and everyone would be mourning. She further suggested that the legends should be showered with flowers by the time they can smell them.
"God forbid if Wayne was to leave this earth right now, the culture would be in mourning," Nicki wrote.
Nicki Minaj, along with several other prominent artists such as Birdman, Master P, Cam’ron, and Mase, has openly criticized Jay Z for not selecting Lil Wayne as the headliner. For now, Lil Wayne had not commented on the announcement of the headliner.
