Blogger Meghan McCain weighed in on Taylor Swift's career, addressing the recent controversy surrounding the Grammy-winning singer. During Monday's, June 24, 2024, episode of her podcast Citizen McCain, Meghan discussed Swift's popularity with her co-host Miranda Wilkins and producer Ashley Digiacomo.

She brought up Taylor Swift frequently being in the news, which includes her relationship with Travis Kelce and speculation that Swift intentionally blocked fellow artists from charting at No. 1 spots. She predicts there is nowhere for the singer to go but down, stating:

"She has, respectfully, no place else to go but down at this point. She has TIME magazine’s person of the year, this tour’s so big, all these things."

She compared the current news cycle to the movie Groundhog Day, saying it is just an endless loop of stories about "Trump, Biden, (and) Taylor Swift." She continued:

"I think she's honestly so big that a backlash probably is not going to happen in the in they way would (happen to) other people. But I do think when she’s done touring, giving us a mild break from being in the news cycle as much as she is would be helpful for her, and us as commentators."

"I just don’t know how classy it is"— Meghan McCain about Taylor Swift's decision to drop versions of her album

Earlier this month, Taylor Swift dropped three new versions of her latest album, The Tortured Poets Department (first released in April 2024), in the U.K. The move secured the top spot for the singer in the UK Albums Chart for the sixth week, beating competition from Charli XCX's Brat. This also broke her previous record of topping the UK charts for five consecutive weeks.

In a similar move last month, the Delicate singer kept Billie Eilish’s new album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, from peaking in the U.S. Netizens have since criticized Swift, as summed up by McCain, calling this move a "deliberate act to sabotage" her peers.

Addressing the controversy, Meghan McCain, who described herself as "not not a fan" of the singer but not a "Swiftie" either, remarked:

"You are Taylor Swift, you are Elvis-level... one of the greatest of all time... There are people coming up who could have their first No. 1 and you have the power to let them have No. 1 or not. I just don’t know how classy it is."

She continues:

"I also think that, karmically, you’re messing with some stuff... I get that The Tortured Poets Department is doing this well... but I do think maybe more focus on music and art instead of, like, checks on a scoreboard."

Producer Digiacomo defends Taylor Swift, saying she is a businesswoman, adding that "she should be able to do what she wants to be successful and not have to worry about someone beneath her." She argued that both Billie Eilish and Charli XCX have previously released versions of their albums as well.

"Why does (she) have to bring herself down to lift someone else up?"

Meghan promptly countered:

"( You think) if she held herself off from releasing more tracks would be bringing herself down?"

Despite arguing against the move, both McCain and Wilkins add they don't "dislike" the singer, with the former adding she "respects" how loyal her fans are.

Both Meghan and Ashley also bring up instances where Taylor Swift has supported other artists, including the time she took on streaming services to push for the rights of smaller artists and donating toward Kesha's legal bills in her lawsuit against Dr. Luke.

Meghan concludes her discussion about the singer releasing multiple versions of her album by stating it was a Catch-22 situation with no right answer.
