News charges have been brought against Durk Devontay Banks, also known as Lil Durk, in the alleged murder-for-hire plot against rival Quando Rondo. On Friday, November 8, 2024, the Justice Department announced that a superseding federal grand jury had indicted the Chicago rapper.
Banks is facing additional charges of one count of conspiracy, one count of use of interstate facilities to commit murder-for-hire resulting in death, and one count of using, carrying, and discharging firearms and a machine gun and possession of such firearms in furtherance of a crime of violence resulting in death.
On October 17, US Marshalls arrested the rapper near the Miami International Airport for allegedly plotting to kill OTF (Only the Family) rival Quando Rondo (real name Tyquian Bowman) in 2022. Authorities alleged that Lil Durk placed a bounty on Quando for his alleged hand in killing King Von, who was signed to OTF in 2020.
The shooting took place at a gas station near the Beverly Center in Los Angeles on August 19, 2022. While Quando Rondo survived the attack on his life, his cousin, Saviay'a Robinson, was killed.
In addition to Lil Durk, five men from his label, OTF, were also arrested in the case
According to an October 2024 press release by federal authorities, authorities arrested Lil Durk as he was attempting to flee the country. He had three international flights booked under his name to Italy, Switzerland, and Dubai.
The release alleged bank and flight records showed that the flight tickets used to carry out the murder-for-hire were purchased with a credit card linked to the rapper and OTF. Lil Durk reportedly "coordinated and paid for five co-conspirators to travel from Chicago to California on the day before the murder."
In addition to Banks, five others with connections to OTF—Kavon London Grant (Cuz or Vonnie), Keith Jones (Flacka), Deandre Dontrell Wilson (DeDe), David Brian Lindsey (Browneyez), and Asa Houston (Boogie)—were also arrested.
In the press release, United States Attorney Martin Estrada condemned the "violent gun crime," stating:
"Mr. Banks is charged with orchestrating a cold-blooded murder that resulted in the death of a rival's family member. Not only that, the shooting occurred in the open, at a gas station at a busy intersection, endangering many others in the area. Violent gun crime of this sort is devastating to our community, and we will have zero tolerance for those who perpetrate such callous acts of violence."
Per an October 2024 article by TMZ, citing sources with direct knowledge about Lil Durk, he was in "great spirits." The source claimed that Banks got along well with his fellow inmates and the detention center staff; however, the rapper complained about the prison food.
According to an October 2024 report by NBC News, Banks is being held at the Broward County jail without bail.
None of the six accused have entered a plea to any of the charges. However, per the release, Lil Durk will face a statutory maximum sentence of life in federal prison if convicted.
