Decades after the death of American rapper Tupac Shakur, former head of security at Death Row Records Reggie Wright Jr retrospects about the incident. In an interview with The Guardian on August 2, Wright Jr. feels that he is responsible for not being able to save the rapper’s life. Wright Jr said:
“My biggest regret is being the one responsible for not saving Tupac’s life.”
The rapper, 25 years old then, was shot on September 7, 1996 in Las Vegas. He died six days later. The former head of security was allegedly blamed for the rapper’s death by various fans and netizens. This accusation forced him to look back at the events.
He also claimed that the security was not licensed to carry guns on that day. Many netizens commented that Tupac should have been surrounded by security on either side, but Reggie Wright Jr. mentioned that the rapper would have never agreed to that as he was quite intrepid. Wright Jr said:
"They always write that Tupac should have had security guards sitting either side of him, but he had no fear and would never agree to that."
Given how bodyguards are underpaid in the industry, Wright Jr further hoped security guards would be paid ‘better’. However, he added that major personalities are taking utmost safety as Beyonce now moves around in a bulletproof van.
Nonetheless, the bodyguards are under the threat of violence and its impact. He stated to the publication, that one is always thinking about what they should have done differently.
Court hearings of Tupac’s murder still underway
In September 2023, Duane Keith Davis, or ‘Keefe D’ was arrested on charges of the rapper’s murder. The arrest was made more than two decades after his death. Keefe D was indicted on the count of open murder with the use of a deadly weapon with a gang enhancement.
In a recent turn of events, the arrestee accused popular rapper Sean Combs or ‘Diddy’ of having paid one million dollars to kill Shakur. As per the court documents, he made the claim in separate interviews which included one with metro police. Combs has denied any involvement with Tupac’s murder.
As per KTNV's June 2024 report, Keefe D has been fighting for bail ahead of his murder trial and he has pleaded ‘not guilty’ for the same. According to law enforcement expert Sunny Slaughter, the accusations were also leveled up in 2009. However, more evidence and facts are needed to tie his claim from an investigative point of view.
Keefe D’s nephew Orlando Anderson was believed to be the main perpetrator. According to the police, the entire plan was put together by Keefe D who wanted to seek revenge for Anderson as he was allegedly assaulted by Tupac and his team members.
He was present in the main vehicle from which shots were fired at the rapper, along with two other members Terrance Brown and Deandre Smith. Except for Keefe D, the three others have passed away over the years.
