On July 17, Reddit user Competitive-Ad-5019 posted that she didn't want her close friend to play Taylor Swift's song Lover during her Taylor Swift-themed wedding. Although excited about the theme, she felt playing Lover was disrespectful since Taylor had added it to her playlist of denial songs. The bride insisted it was her wedding and she could play whatever music she wanted.
This is in reference to the fact that on April 5, Swift released some playlists on Apple Music, each named after a different song or variation from The Tortured Poets Department. Every album is built on the five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.
The denial playlist, named I Love You, It's Ruining My Life, featured songs Lavender Haze, Snow on the Beach, Sweet Nothing, Glitch, Betty, Willow, Cruel Summer, Lover, Miss Americana, and the Heartbreak Prince, False God, Style, Wildest Dreams, Treacherous, Untouchable, Ours, and Bejeweled.
Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department includes five albums dedicated to the five stages of grief
Recently two friends got into a disagreement over which Taylor Swift song to play in one of their weddings. The bride wanted to play Lover but her friend thought it would be inappropriate. The friend of the bride then took to Reddit on July 17 to share their thoughts in a post.
The post read that they were delighted about the wedding that was scheduled for July 20. They both had a great time with the preparations, however, they disagreed on the songs to be played.
The post continued,
“During the ceremony she wants to play the song Lover which is one of her favorite songs and I get that but I’m trying to tell her that it would be insensitive to play Lover since Taylor specifically added it to her denial playlist and it would be invalidating that, but she keeps saying it’s her wedding and she can play whatever.”
It further read,
"We had a fight about this yesterday and we haven’t spoken much since but I love her and I don’t want to miss her wedding. Please share your thoughts ASAP. "
The "denial playlist" referred to Swift's selection of five unique Apple Music playlists that examine the five phases of grief. Following the release of the album The Tortured Poets Department on April 19, Swift made these playlists available on Apple Music. The first stage covered denial, and about that, Taylor Swift said to Apple Music,
"This is a list of songs about getting so caught up in the idea of something that you have a hard time seeing the red flags, possibly resulting in moments of denial and maybe a little bit of delusion. Results may vary.”
The singer also performed Lover, a love song from 2019, which is rumored to have been inspired by her ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn.
US News reported in an article published on April 6 that the singer's fans were eager to point out that several of the tracks were either about her ex- boyfriend Joe Alwyn or co-written by him. They added that Taylor Swift released the Midnights vault track You're Losing Me soon after her break up with Alwyn.
