Taylor Swift's long-standing concert 'The Eras Tour' came to an end with its final show in Vancouver, Canada, on December 8, 2024. The tour, a culmination of Swift's nearly two-decade-long musical career, spanned almost two years across five continents. It featured songs from all her albums, including her latest 2024 release, The Tortured Poets Department.
'The Eras Tour', which also received a theatrical release in the form of a concert film, featured Swift performing two surprise songs every show, the first on her acoustic guitar and the second on her piano.
For her last show, the singer performed a mash-up of A Place in this World / New Romantics on her guitar and a medley of Long Live / New Year’s Day / The Manuscript on the piano.
During the medley, Taylor Swift altered the lyrics of Long Live, singing "It was the end of an era," instead of "It was the end of a decade" to signify the end of her tour. The changed lyrics seemingly left Swifties emotional, with the altered line trending on social media after the show ended.
Taylor Swift's Long Live was an ode to her fans
Long Live was the closing track from Taylor Swift's 2010 album Speak Now. The five-minute track used themes referencing high school and royalty, speaking of kings, queens, and kingdoms.
"I said, "Remember this moment"/ In the back of my mind/ The time we stood with our shaking hands/ The crowds in stands went wild/ We were the kings and the queens/ And they read off our names/ The night you danced like you knew our lives/ Would never be the same/ You held your head like a hero/ On a history book page/ It was the end of a decade/ But the start of an age," she sings in verse 1.
During the 'Speak Now World Tour' in 2011, Taylor Swift explained that Long Live was written during her 2009 'Fearless Tour' as an ode to her fans, bandmates, and team. She added the track was heavily inspired by her fans cheering for her during her live shows.
Long Live was on the 'The Eras Tour' setlist after Speak Now (Taylor's Version) was released in July 2023. However, the track was one of the six songs to be removed from the setlist to make way for the new songs from The Tortured Poets Department from May 2024.
Long Live performed as one of the special songs in some of her later shows, including her last concert at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver on December 8. According to USA Today, Taylor Swift ended her final 'Eras Tour' show by bidding farewell to her fans before performing the closing song Karma from Midnights.
“Vancouver I want to thank every single one of you for being a part of the most thrilling chapter of my entire life to date, my beloved Eras Tour,” she said.
'The Eras Tour' began in Glendale in March 2023, months after Taylor Swift released her tenth studio album Midnights in October 2022. The tour, which marked Swift's sixth stadium tour, ran for nearly two years from March 2023 to December 2024.
Between that time, the singer released Taylor's Version of her 2010 album Speak Now and her 2014 album 1989. She also unveiled her latest project in April this year entitled The Tortured Poets Department.
