When did Dove Cameron first meet boyfriend Damiano David of Måneskin? Former Disney star opens up about her relationship

Actress and singer Dove Cameron opened up about her relationship with Italian singer and Måneskin frontman Damiano David, whom she first met in 2022. In her Tuesday, June 25, 2024, interview for Cosmopolitan's cover story, the 28-year-old clued into the beginnings of her romance with Damiano.

"The first time (we met) was at the 2022 VMAs and his band and I were both up for the same award. You just run into different artists backstage, and when I met them, I don’t think I even spoke to Damiano. I didn’t think anything of it. I went about my night," she began.

To be noted, Dove is referring to the 2022 MTV Video Music Award. Both Dove and Måneskin were nominated for Best New Artist, which the former won.

The Liv and Maddie star explained she initially didn't think much of the interaction, but a couple of months after the awards, the band's team reached out to her to come for their album release. While Dove couldn't make it, she recalled feeling touched by the invitation.

Dove Cameron told Cosmopolitan that at one point she and Måneskin were set to collaborate, and the band asked her to join their tour as an opening act. Unfortunately, she "couldn't make it happen."

"There were just these passing-ships-in-the-night things happening. So when we met again at the 2023 VMAs, we had a reason to talk to each other."

Talking about their 2023 VMA meeting, she explained that Damiano approached her to request that she come to his band's then-upcoming Madison Square Garden performance (September 2023). Recalling the event, she explained, "It was super innocent," adding that they invited her to their green room and the pair began talking.

"Aand then he asked me to the after-party. And then very quickly it became 'Let’s have dinner at 8:00 at this spot,'" she explained.

"He’s a Capricorn, so he was very much like, “Okay, these are my intentions.” It was super honorable. He’s like a 1950s gentleman, angel, teddy bear. He’s the best person I’ve met in my life," she continued.

However, Dove Cameron explained that their relationship didn't escalate "overnight." She elaborated that they were both "sort of investigating," adding that they both had been in "situations where we were very harmed." She explained it was "very, very slow" and "cautious."

The pair first sparked dating rumors when Cameron was spotted at the band's MSG concert. Their relationship was confirmed in November 2023 when they were clicked kissing at Bondi Beach in Australia.

Dove Cameron praised her boyfriend, stating he was the "kindest, most generous, most innocent, most giving person." She added that he was the "best person (she's) met in (her) life."

Dove Cameron, born Chloe Celeste Hosterman, rose to fame by appearing on the Disney Channel's comedy series Liv and Maddie. Her work on the show earned her the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Performer in Children's Programming. She has since appeared in hit films and shows like Barely Lethal, Descendants, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

In addition to her acting career, Cameron also found success as a musician. She has lent her voice for scores on Liv and Maddie and Descendants. In 2023, the 28-year-old released her debut album, Alchemical: Volume 1, which included the single Boyfriend. `It reached the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified platinum by the RIAA.
